Gas leak empties Brooks Street

Tuesday morning, April 30, a ruptured gas line along Elm Avenue between South Taylor Street and South Franklin Street led to the evacuation of town offices and businesses along Brooks Street and the closure of Elm Avenue. With the memory of the gas-leak caused explosion with loss of life and injuries in Durham only weeks past, Wake Forest firefighters and Wake Forest police officers moved people away from the danger zone. The Wake Forest Town Hall, The Wake Forest Police Department, The Forks Cafeteria, the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, Page 158 Books, Over the Falls, Brook Street Bowl, Dollar General and Arrow Tree Boutique were ordered evacuated. The Wake Forest Fire Department Station #1 almost directly across the street was not evacuated because, Assistant Chief Daryl Cash with the Wake Forest Fire Department said, the gas “was going in the opposite direction.” They also did not have to evacuate the

Opinion: I support NC teachers

My mother, Marion Tubbs Williams, was a teacher in upstate New York. She received two semesters of instruction in something called a training class right after high school and went to work in a two-teacher school not far from the family farm. She had to help with the milking, drive the milk cans to Richland to meet the train, drive back and get ready for school before she could teach. Later she managed a year at the teachers college in Oswego, got married, and commuted more than 40 miles to classes during the typical deep snows in that region. She taught in a three-teacher school in Redfield for six years before pregnancy (me) forced her to quit. After her husband died, she went back to teaching in Redfield for several years before getting a job as a first-grade teacher at Mexico Academy & Central School in Mexico. By the time

Brief Bits

I have a habit of checking the Southeast High Speed Rail website occasionally, and I have good news for those who do not like the disruptions planned for Wake Forest. Or I think it is good news. First, there are no news releases about high speed rail through from Raleigh to Richmond or any other route Second, it is not possible to find the study maps which showed the different segments in great detail. Third, there is no information about funding except to say that state and federal funding would be necessary to build the system. Fourth, all the information in the website is about a year old. The conclusion has to be that high speed rail through Wake Forest is no longer viewed as a current possibility, and everyone who has worked on it in the state Department of Transportation has been assigned other duties.
