Go Meet in the Street May 4

Saturday, May 4, the 39th annual Meet in the Street festival returns to historic downtown Wake Forest with over 200 arts and crafts vendors, more than 20 food vendors and food trucks, live music and other entertainment. Well over 30,000 people are expected for the event that runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on South White Street, South Taylor Street and South Brooks Street. Visitors can take advantage of the free shuttle service, thanks to Sam’s Club and the Banks Kerr Family YMCA. Visitors can hop on one of two YMCA buses at the Wake Forest Sam’s Club, 11460 Royall Cotton Road, for the short trip to downtown. The shuttle will run continuously from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the last shuttle leaves downtown. Music at Midday returns Thursday, May 9

For four Thursdays in May, area residents can take their lunches to Centennial Plaza in front of the Wake Forest Town Hall and enjoy great music from noon to 1 p.m.. It’s the spring season music series, Music at Midday. The series will run from May 9 – after the pine pollen season – until May 30 – after which it is often too hot and steamy to enjoy an outdoor lunch. The musicians this year are Big Bang Boom on May 9, Into the Fog on May 16, Kristi Dixon on May 23 and the Freddy Greene Trio on May 30. Lumpy’s Ice Cream will be on site selling desserts and sweet treats during each concert. The music series is sponsored by the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department and ARTS Wake Forest.

Forestville Square broke ground April 17

Two Wake Forest business owners helped break ground on Wednesday, April 17, for a new retail center at 1021 Forestville Road where their existing businesses will relocate this fall. Ellie Penner, owner of Sole Dimensions, and Sarah Boulton, owner of Body Bliss Salon & Spa, will be the first tenants in the new Forestville Square retail building across the road from Heritage High School that is being developed by Robert Shaar of Optimal Equity Corporation. Shaar has developed other local retail centers including the buildings that house buku Wake Forest, Wine & Beer 101 Wake Forest and Wake Forest Smiles Family Dentistry. Sole Dimensions, a specialized retail shoe store with products that help maximize sports performance and relieve foot pain, is now at 10560 Ligon Mill Road, Suite 101. HerbFest open again this weekend

The 20th annual HerbFest was open to the public last weekend and will be open again this weekend, from Thursday, April 26, through Sunday, April 28, at the usual spot between two warehouses at 525 South White Street. On Fridays and Saturdays it will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; on Sundays the hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This popular annual event will feature a variety of vendors appealing to those interested in gardening, home, cooking and a healthy lifestyle as well as the largest selection of herbs to be found in one place. Help celebrate Building Safety Month Saturday

May is Building Safety Month, Electrical Safety Month and Deck Safety Month, and the Wake Forest Inspections Department is launching these observances with a Building, Electrical & Deck Safety Month Kick-Off this Saturday, April 27. The free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Town & Country Hardware, 910 Gateway Commons Circle. Saturday’s kick-off will include free hot dogs – while they last – games and prizes. Inspections staff will also be on hand to answer questions about building, electrical and deck safety and the building permit process. Area residents are invited to come and learn about the services the department offers, including Online Plan Review and Express Residential Plan Review. Dementia series continues on April 25

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts is hosting a series of seminars through June to raise awareness about Alzeheimer’s disease and related dementias. Each seminar in the 2019 Dementia Awareness Education Series offers residents the opportunity to learn about dozens of dementia-related programs, services, products and resources – all in one location. Instructors, programs/ideas needed for Joyner Park Center

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is recruiting instructors and soliciting youth and adult course/program ideas for fall 2019 at the Joyner Park Community Center. Now under construction, the 32,000-square-foot community center is expected to be completed this summer. Designed to blend in with current Joyner Park structures and the natural habitat, the new facility will feature a walking track, gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, multi-purpose rooms, dance studio and kitchen. The parks and rec department is especially in need of the following program instructors: preschool dance, preschool sports fundamentals, youth/adult fitness, preschool music and culinary arts. However, other program ideas will be considered. The department offers an array of year-round recreation classes and activities. Buckshot Becky starts Six Sundays in Spring April 28

Country, blues, salsa, jazz. A wide variety of music will be offered in the 2019 Six Sundays in Spring concert series in the amphitheater at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. The outdoor concerts last from 5 to 7 p.m. every Sunday afternoon beginning on April 28 and ending on June 2. The opening band is Buckshot Betty, four musicians who blend traditional country music with elements of low-rent bluegrass, Cajun, southern rock, blues, and the occasional side trip into Bakersfield. May is Wake Forest Month of Fitness

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department will offer a free fitness series in May. Free and open to area residents of all ages, May Month of Fitness will offer the following classes throughout May: Camp Gladiator on Mondays, Yoga on Tuesdays and Zumba on Wednesdays – except May 22. Each class will be offered on their respective nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. All classes are free and require no registration. Free Bicycle Safety Fair May 4

May is Bike Safety Month and the Town of Wake Forest is helping to raise awareness about the importance of safe bicycle use by sponsoring a free Bicycle Safety Fair on Saturday, May 4. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will take place in Town Hall’s Brooks Street parking lot at 301 South Brooks Street. This year’s safety fair will be offered as part of the 39th annual Meet in the Street. Plus, in honor of Star Wars Day on May 4, every participant who comes dressed in costume as a Star Wars character will be entered in a drawing for a Star Wars prize pack.
