WF Fire proposes to join the town

The independent Wake Forest Fire Department is requesting the Town of Wake Forest undertake a study of the feasibility to integrate the fire department into the town’s administration. Wake Forest Town Manager Kip Padgett made the Nov. 9 letter public during the Nov. 20 town board meeting. The five commissioners, after a discussion, voted to hire a private company to conduct that study. William Wandrack, president of the fire department’s board of directors, said the reason is employee benefits. “Currently, our firefighters have an excellent 401k plan that the department does a great job of supporting. However, it’s not quite the same as a true pension plan. “As a not-for-profit, independent fire department, we are not eligible for the state pension plan. This is causing some issues with our retention and recruitment. Chief (Ron) Early has done an excellent job in researching ways to get our guys into the pension

Communications & Public Affairs Director Bill Crabtree said the case has been “inactivated” because of the lack of leads. Catz may return to repair the statue or it may be done by town personnel.

Brief Bits

In the good news department, Wake Forest area folks donated enough turkeys and cash to allow the Wake Forest Police Department to give away 806 turkeys on Monday, Nov. 19 at the Wake Forest Community House. In addition to the one turkey for each family, there were 370 bags of side dish items provided by Living World Family Church and a few thousand pounds of sweet potatoes provided by Wake Forest Presbyterian Church. The 806 turkeys this year match or nearly match the 800-plus turkeys contributed last year. It brings the total through the years to over 7,000 turkeys. Officer M. Sattler has been organizing this turkey drive since 2007. He and his fellow officers who helped deserve our thanks. You can reach him at 919-795-7270 or msattler@wakeforestnc.gov. * * * * Another bit of good news is that about 35 volunteers have signed up to plant 200 trees throughout

Arts organization changes its name and logo

A Wake Forest nonprofit that puts the arts first in the community, is now putting the arts first in its new name. Wake Forest ARTS has changed its name and updated its logo to ARTS Wake Forest (AWF). For 28 years, the organization has supported and enhanced a strong, vibrant community through the development, promotion and coordination of arts and cultural activities, and the group believes its new name will help it gain greater awareness as an independent, all-volunteer organization. “Events presented by ARTS Wake Forest bring arts to our community and provide opportunities for established and emerging artists, while also encouraging creativity, innovation and interaction,” said Mary Petretich, ARTS Wake Forest president. “This subtle but significant name change, along with a new logo, puts the emphasis where it belongs – on the arts.” The group’s new logo, designed by AWF Board Member Bill Cokas’ branding agency Strategic Insights in Wake Forest, conveys the many different art forms supported by the nonprofit – music, drama, film, dance and the written word. The nonprofit was started in 1990 by a group of community volunteers who called
