Gay withdraws Radford Glen

On June 27 Russell Gay, who was negotiating with former Wake Forest mayor George Mackie Jr. to purchase 47 acres on Wait Avenue (NC 98) for the Radford Glen subdivision, submitted a request to withdraw the subdivision’s rezoning and masterplan application “since no resolution between the developer and property owner on the contractual agreement had been reached.” The Radford Glen rezoning and master plan was one of only three items on the Wake Forest Planning Board’s agenda Tuesday night. The request to withdraw was approved unanimously. The board also unanimously recommended rezoning 2.96 acres next to the 7 acres occupied by Envision Academy at the intersection of Traditions Grande Boulevard and Oak Grove Church Road. The rezoning was necessary because it had been annexed along with the 7 acres but not rezoned. The planning board also approved several amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance but, after discussion recommended the requirement

Just a little history: Fire at the W.W. Holding Cotton Company

There really was a cotton company long before the Cotton Company market place on South White Street. Called the W.W. Holding Cotton Company it was begun by William Willis Holding and carried on by his son, W.W. Holding II (referred to locally as Big Bill), and grandsons, W.W. Holding III (Little Bill) and Walter Holding (Buddy). The family also owned Holding Dairy farm at the end of Friendship Chapel Road which is now being developed as Holding Village subdivision. The cotton company bought and sold cotton locally – one of the Crenshaw family was known as being happy to look out from her porch and see “just white,” the cotton fields rolling over the hills – and the Royall Cotton Mill, when it was in operation in the separate village just north of Wake Forest, bought local cotton. It was also a cotton brokerage operating throughout the southeast. The company’s

Strangers rescue trapped mail carrier

By Carol Pelosi, editor It’s not a good thing when you look up to see a sideways small mail truck flying through the air in front of your car. We were driving on Durham Road next to Paschal Golf Course early Saturday afternoon on our way to Patty Ray’s funeral when the mail truck flew in front of the car ahead of us. He stopped, we stopped, and my husband, John, and son Randy popped out of the car and headed back to the truck as did the driver ahead of us. John, Randy, Cam McCamy and two other men succeeded in tipping the truck off its side and onto its wheels and found the woman mail carrier had been thrown out of the truck and trapped underneath. Other strangers stopped to help. She said she needed water so John came back to get a water bottle and said to
