Jazz in the afternoon with the John Brown Quartet

The John Brown Quartet will be featured Sunday, June 3, in the final concert for the 2018 Six Sundays in Spring, performing from 5 to 7 p.m. in the amphitheater at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. The Town of Wake Forest and Wake Forest ARTS sponsor the series, and the John Brown Quartet is cosponsored by PineCone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music Inc. There will be a variety of food and dessert trucks, and people are also encouraged to bring coolers, food, blankets and chairs to spread under the trees and on the lawn. Charcoal grills are not allowed but two large charcoal grills are on site. Animalia returns for RenCen Centre

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts at 405 Brooks Street will kick off its grand re-opening weekend on Friday, June 1, at 6:30 p.m. with Animalia, presented by Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets. A quintessential children’s favorite, Animalia explores the magical world of animals. From the metamorphoses of a butterfly and a tadpole to a soaring eagle, a school of fish, ecological systems and endangered animals, all come to life during this performance by internationally award-winning puppeteer Hobey Ford and his Golden Rod Puppets. Geared for children pre-K through sixth grade and their families, the performance features Hobey’s original “foamies” puppets carved from large blocks of foam with intricate mechanical design that gives each puppet realistic movements. Free monthly movies for kids and seniors resume

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will resume its free monthly movie showings for children ages 10 and under and adults ages 50 and older on Monday, June 11. Starting at 10:30 a.m. the Renaissance Centre will host “flix4kidz,” followed at 3 p.m. by “Free at 3.” Both events had been suspended over the last several months while the Renaissance Centre was undergoing extensive renovations. First Friday Flix will resume July 6 at 7 p.m. The June 11 flix4kidz featured film will be “Paddington 2” (PG), while the Free at Three movie will be “The Commuter” (PG13). Concessions, including popcorn and soft drinks, will be available for purchase during both events. William Howard Crum Raleigh William Howard Crum, 81, of Raleigh, formerly of Cliffwood Lake, Vernon Township, New Jersey, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 23, 2018, in Raleigh. He was born in Salisbury Mills, New York to the late Harry Crum and Anna Beatrice Wright Crum. Mr. Crum was a veteran of the New Jersey Army National Guard and worked for 35 years as an electrician from Universal Manufacturing Corporation/MagneTek in Paterson, New Jersey. He then later retired after working for Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pequannock, New Jersey for ten years. William was an active sportsman who enjoyed the outdoors. He truly enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and family. He bowled in many leagues throughout his lifetime. His presence will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held in New Jersey at a later date.
