Cold weather means higher bills for some

The recent stretch of cold weather and snow along with single-digit overnight temperatures for several nights in a row will have some area electric customers in shock when they see their bills. In Wake Forest homes and businesses are served by the town-operated system, Wake Forest Power, and by Wake Electric Membership Cooperative in Heritage and other subdivisions and businesses on the east side of town. There are also a few Duke Energy customers on the west side of town. Andrew Brown Jr., the customer service manager for the customer service division of the Town of Wake Forest Finance Department, and Nicole Press, the utility billing specialist, spoke with the Gazette Tuesday. Back then in 1942 and up through the 1970s there were two travel tracks and several sidings at the two stations because of all the passengers and freight that moved by rail in and out of town. The freight depot (now the site of the town’s depot parking lot) sat on the east side of the tracks with the passenger station on the east. A small brick building was built in the 1970s near the site of the passenger station and was to serve both passenger and freight business but the Seaboard Airlines Railroad Company ended stops in Wake Forest soon after the building was complete. It still stands at

Digital permitting plan review processing announced

In February the Town of Wake Forest will launch a digital permitting and building plan review system that saves time and money for architects, developers, planners, residents and anyone else planning a residential or commercial project. Known as Electronic Plan Review (EPR), the new initiative allows anyone who needs to have a plan reviewed by the Town to submit the plan electronically, and then see comments left by plan reviewers in real time. In addition to saving time and money, EPR also saves paper and eliminates the cost of printing multiple sets of plans for review. It also allows applicants to access the plans they submitted and monitor the status of their plan review anywhere internet service is available. Finally, EPR effectively reduces the amount of time applicants must spend at Town Hall, while also shortening wait times. The Inspections Department will host a kick-off demonstration on Electronic Plan Review
