Johnson, Duguid, Optimists honored

Monday night Michael Johnson was named the 2017 winner of the Peggy Allen Award, Mandy Duguid was named Citizen of the Year and the Wake Forest Optimist Club was named the Organization of the Year. The awards were made by Mayor Vivian Jones during the 70th annual Community Christmas Dinner at The Forks Cafeteria with 285 people attending. Earlier Jill Bright, the emcee and dinner committee co-chair, recognized the two women who have attended all but one of the dinners since it began in 1947 to show the area’s gratitude for the returning World War II veterans. Longtime friends and neighbors Nora Dickens and Shirley Wooten were both ill last year and could not attend, breaking their record. There was standing applause for the two. The Peggy Allen Lifetime Achievement Award, established by the Allen family after Peggy’s death in 2004, honors those people who have a record of service

Townhouse plan gets a thorough vetting

The Wake Forest Planning Board members saw a lot to like about the plan for Forestville Towns, 95 townhouses on the deadend section of Forestville Road reached only by a short street off Rogers Road. It is close to shops and restaurants; the U design makes it compact, leaving a lot of untouched open space; the developer plans to move a power line; and the active open space would include a bocce court and a volleyball/badminton court. But there were down sides. Everyone was concerned about the traffic which would have to enter Rogers Road at the intersection where the Wake Forest Police Department stations an officer to direct traffic so that vehicles on the short street can turn right or left. Chairman Ed Gary very emphatically objected to the use of vinyl siding from personal experience, he said, and from the examples of fires locally where vinyl siding helped

Vietnam War Memorial replica to be in WF in October

“The Wall that Heals,” one of the two half-size replicas of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be displayed in Wake Forest for four days in October, Oct. 18 through 21. Commissioner Greg Harrington announced the visit during the Wake Forest Town Board’s work session Tuesday evening. The plan is to display the wall on the lawn in front of the Calvin Jones House and the Wake Forest Historical Museum on North Main Street because it is an open public space large enough. The visit is sponsored by the Wake Forest Purple Heart Foundation. Today Harrington said the steering committee would begin meeting to plan for the visit next week. “We do need volunteers and also MONEY.” The website says: “The Wall that Heals” is the half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for thirty-plus years. When John Devitt attended

Sports complex has to go through planning process

The plan for an extensive sports complex on 114 acres owned by the Town of Wake Forest will have to go through the complete planning process, several town officials assured the Gazette this week. The process includes providing a fully detailed site plan to be reviewed by the planning staff, usually several changes which can take time, and then consideration by the planning board and town board. The lease agreed on by the town and the Complex Sports Group has been signed, officials said, but it only allows the group to proceed to construction after the plan is approved. The town owns two adjoining tracts on the east side of Capital Boulevard and the north bank of the Neuse River. The first tract of 41.44 acres was a gift to the town by Riverplace III LLC made in December 2001. Riverplace had purchased the land in 1999 from Burlington Mills
