Town agrees to lease with sports group

Tuesday night the Wake Forest Town Board agreed to lease 114 acres on the east side of Capital Boulevard just north of the Neuse River and across the highway from the former Burlington Mills factory, now used for U-Haul sales, to the Complex Sports Group. That group – Steve McKinion, Bobby Murray, Jason McCoy and Jonathan Hayward –plans to build an athletic sports complex that will include an inflatable dome with room for two multi-use athletic fields and fields for baseball, soccer and lacrosse. Riders vandalize Joyner Park; Joyner offers award

During the evening of Thursday, Nov. 16, one or two people operating vehicles vandalized several areas in Joyner Park, leaving deep tire tracks and damage to turf, particularly in the field next to the small pond. Carroll Joyner, who gave his name to the park, is offering a $1,000 award for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the vandalism. Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Director Ruben Wall said Monday he received a phone call from Joyner earlier that day expressing his disappointment that someone would cause so much damage and offering the reward in hopes the person responsible is held accountable. Anyone with information concerning the vandalism of Joyner Park should call the Wake Forest Police Department at 919-554-6150. The Joyner Park property was a working farm as recently as the 1940s. Generous Wake Foresters donate 850 turkeys

Monday a happy Wake Forest Police Officer M.W. Sattler was able to report he and his fellow officers and office staff had 850 turkeys on hand that morning to distribute to 850 families in need of help for their Thanksgiving dinner. Area people and businesses donated 270 turkeys in the last few days of the Wake Forest Police Department’s annual Turkey Drive. Sattler had reported 580 (actual turkeys and donations to purchase) on the Monday before Saturday’s turkey drop-off. Officer Sattler organized the department’s first Turkey Drive in 2007 and since then the department has distributed nearly 6,000 turkeys with this year’s 850 making it close to 7,000 turkeys. * * * * There were equally generous donors Saturday to a food drive organized by the Town of Wake Forest, radio station 96.1 BBB and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The drive, in two locations during

Brief Bits

People have asked for months and now the Gazette can say that there is ground preparation work underway for Capital Chevrolet (formerly Bobby Murray Chevrolet) on Capital Boulevard, once the site of a driving range. * * * * A new set of traffic signals have been erected at the intersection of Rogers Road and Heritage Branch Road but early this week they had not even been unwrapped. DOT will probably unwrap them and set them at blinking yellow before finally making them operational. There is nothing yet at the other intersection in dire need of signals – Heritage Club Avenue at Heritage Lake Road.

Guard against fraud and scams, cops urge

The Wake Forest Police Department is urging area residents to guard against becoming the victim of fraud following a number of recently reported phone scams. (One was described in detail on FaceBook Tuesday.) In these incidents, potential victims receive phone calls from scammers alleging they have kidnapped a relative, or a family member has been assaulted or injured. The scammers then demand the victim send a ransom or payment immediately via wire transfer or pre-paid gift card. They sometimes threaten violence or even death to the alleged kidnapping victim unless the ransom is paid. The scammers fabricate such tales hoping the potential victims will pay the demanded money without verifying whether the story is real. The callers who commit this kind of fraud often share the following characteristics: Instruct the victim to stay on the phone while they verify the payment transfer has occurred and not to contact anyone; Use generic
