Three women sweep the board

The three women on the ballot in Wake Forest’s town election Tuesday – incumbent Mayor Vivian Jones and soon-to-be-commissioners Bridget Wall-Lennon and Liz Simpers – were the big winners. Jones won her fifth four-year term by defeating first-term Commissioner Jim Thompson with 2,257 votes (56.68 percent) to his 1,718 votes (43.14 percent), according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections website. All figures are unofficial until the election is certified by the Wake County Board of Elections. Wall-Lennon led in the five-person race for two seats on the town board with 1,773 votes (24.88 percent) and Simpers was just behind her with 1,695 votes (23.78 percent). Because there are no voting districts in Wake Forest the two candidates with the most votes are elected to the two open seats. Commissioner Margaret Stinnett chose not to run for a fourth term and Thompson could not run for re-election to the

Brief Bits

Reading about the recall of KIDDE fire extinguishers made the editor recall the excitement around town when the Walter Kidde Company, makers of engineered systems for fire protection bought property south of town in 1982, built a $6-million plant, said they would employ up to 250 people and moved their national headquarters here. That did not last long because in 1989 a holding company bought Kidde and Feneval, another firm making fire protection systems, merged the two firms and moved the Wake Forest operations to a Feneval facility. The Wake Forest plant was sold to The Body Shop in 1992 and the company has long been a steady local employer. A couple years ago L’Oreal, which then owned The Body Shop said it planned to shut down the Wake Forest operation but a small number of employees were still working in town. The editor asked Jason Cannon, the town’s economic

Opinion: Campaign slurs sharply rebuked

I have been disappointed and disheartened during the year’s town election campaign by the disrespect and lack of common courtesy the backers of one candidate, Commissioner Jim Thompson, made in public spaces such as Facebook and the comments sections of The Wake Forest Gazette. Many comments that I thought were close to libelous I approved to let readers know about the state of the campaign. I heard several times that state Representative Chris Malone was backing Thompson and urged him to run. I do not know that it is true; I suspect strongly that it is because Malone has been trying to build a power base in this area, probably with a view of running for another office soon. After watching town elections for 47 years, I can say I’ve never heard and seen such disrespect and lack of common courtesy. I am happy to say that others saw and

70 years old, the Christmas Dinner is still lively town tradition

The Wake Forest Community Christmas Dinner, now in its 70th year, was first held in 1947 as a way to show appreciation to the town’s returning World War II veterans. Organized by the Wake Forest Garden Club and the Civic Club, the original dinner was held in the Community House on Owen Avenue, which was decked in live greenery for the occasion. The event was a tremendous success and a new tradition was born. In the seventy years since, the Wake Forest Community Christmas Dinner has retained that spirit of giving and friendship and has become part of the story of Christmas in Wake Forest. The dinner still ranks among the very best celebrations the town has to offer each and every holiday season. Always held on the first Monday in December, this year’s Community Christmas Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, at the Forks Cafeteria,
