Free wi-fi now available in downtown Wake Forest

Everyone is now able to connect to the internet in downtown, thanks to the Town of Wake Forest Free downtown wi-fi now makes it possible for residents and visitors to use the Internet outdoors along portions of South White Street, South Brooks Street and South Taylor Street using their smart phones, tablets and laptops. The network is not designed to penetrate through buildings, so users will be unable to access the Internet in their homes or businesses via wi-fi. There is a lot of dirt being moved around and added to the 2.5 acres in the southeast quadrant where Heritage Branch Road meets Rogers Road, but do not expect to see a new building any time soon, Jennifer Currin, the development services manager in the new Development Services Department made up of the former planning and engineering departments, said this week. The Heritage Branch office and retail building is being developed by R E D P LLC, a new limited liability company owned by Wake Forest resident Robert James Shaar. Wake Electric is now accepting applications for Bright Ideas education grants of up to $3,000 for creative classroom projects, and teachers who apply by the early bird deadline of Aug. 15 will be entered to win an extra $100. Town permitted 94 new homes in July

The Wake Forest Inspections Department permitted 94 homes in July, 62 single-family houses and 32 townhouses, a figure reflecting the number of subdivisions where there is active building and the demand for housing by all the newcomers. Wake County now has over 1 million residents with an average of 64 new residents every day (including births, deaths and moving), and six or seven of that 64 move to Wake Forest. That growth is accelerating. There will probably be 2 million people in Wake by 2054, and many of the newcomers move into apartments and condos, something that is expected to continue according to studies by Wake County. Wake Forest still is mostly single-family units (houses and townhouses) – 10,865 or 69 percent, according to the 2016 Development Activities Report published by the Wake Forest Planning Department – with duplexes at 522 or 3 percent and multi-family units (apartments) at 4,220

Love Tribe takes over White Street Friday night

Friday Night on White, downtown Wake Forest’s popular outdoor music series, continues with Love Tribe on Friday, Aug. 11. Presented by White Street Brewing Co., Friday Night on White takes place along South White Street in downtown Wake Forest from 6-9 p.m. on the second Friday night of each month from April through September. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase at several downtown restaurants during every Friday Night on White. Second Lawn Care 101 planned for Aug. 31

Due to the community’s overwhelming response to the Aug. 30 “Lawn Care 101” workshop, the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department will offer a second session on Thursday, Aug. 31. The Aug. 30 session is now full, so organizers have scheduled a second workshop the following day to accommodate interested residents. The Aug. 31 workshop will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Wake Forest Town Hall Ground Floor Meeting Room at 301 Brooks Street. The Wake Forest Police Department will host a free BikeSafe Rider Skills Day on Friday, Aug. 25, beginning at 8:45 a.m. at the Wake Forest Police Department, 225 South Taylor Street. Area motorcyclists are invited to participate in the course designed to make riding a motorcycle safer and more enjoyable.
