Candidates Jones, Wall-Lennon state their views

Two of the five candidates for two seats on the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners were not able to submit their answers to some questions from the Gazette but have sent them in this week. First, the editor apologizes to Edward (Ned) Jones for the grievous error of referring to him to Ned Moffett. Moffett is his middle name. We are very sorry for the mistake. Ned Jones says, “Wake Forest is a wonderful place to live. My wife and I have enjoyed living here. I am semi-retired and have wanted to become more involved so running for Wake Forest commissioner is the perfect opportunity. The fast growth of Wake Forest endangers the life style we have here. The growth has caused significant traffic problems. While in many cases these issues are not the town’s, the board should be able to influence them. I also feel that the government leadership

4th committee wants to hand fireworks to town

After more than four decades of coordinating and producing Wake Forest’s annual Independence Day Celebration, the Fourth of July Planning Committee is ready for a change. That was the message delivered by Planning Committee Chair Rob Mitchell during last evening’s town board work session. Mitchell formally requested the town assume responsibility for producing the annual stadium program and fireworks display starting in 2018. Scheduled each year on July 3, the fireworks show is the traditional kick-off to Wake Forest’s two-day July Fourth festivities. The popular Children’s Parade and Art & Games in the Park follow on July 4. For over 40 years, the festivities have been organized by the Fourth of July Planning Committee, an all-volunteer organization currently comprised of 15 or so dedicated members. The committee met recently to discuss the future of the annual celebration. At the conclusion of the meeting, the attending members voted to maintain responsibility

Powerhouse Row group asks for town help

The potential developers of Powerhouse Row, a mixed-use downtown development project slated to occupy the empty lot at the corner of Elm Avenue and South White Street immediately east of the CSX rail line, asked the Wake Forest Town Board Tuesday night to extend the White Street streetscape project south to include the project and to help with parking for the future retail, restaurant and apartment tenants. The mayor, commissioners and town manager, showing some knowledge of the project before Tuesday night’s work session, agreed to those requests and the third one, which is to be flexible about the police department’s lease of one of the three buildings which will be razed after the first building is complete. The empty lot and the three buildings at 430, 432 and 502 South White, 1.7 acres in all,  are owned by Wright Partners, which is Ricky Wright, owner of the Electric Motor

Zoning battle rages on North Main

There is a zoning battle raging on North Main Street because the landowner at 1047 North Main wants to sell the 4.5 acres to a developer who plans 40 townhouses there. The land is owned by Albert Dudley Jr., who lives in Virginia and has inherited it from his father. The family home, a rambling rustic-appearing building with gables, has been in disuse for at least a year with tall weeds growing in the front yard which always has featured two or three vehicles that might not be usable. The land is in the town’s extra-territorial jurisdiction and has Wake County rural district zoning which allows for up to eight single-family houses. While the house is valued at under $70,000, the Wake County tax appraisers set the land’s value at $200,000. It is immediately adjacent to The Meadows subdivision on the north, close to Olde Mill Stream subdivision on the
