Commissioners vote 3-1 for earlier liquor sales

Three Wake Forest commissioners – Brian Pate, Margaret Stinnett and Jim Thompson – voted Tuesday night to allow businesses to serve and sell beer, wine and liquor beginning at 10 a.m. on Sundays instead of noon. But it will be another month before the change takes effect in town because of N.C. General Statute 160A-75. The town’s attorney, Eric Vernon, explained it says that “municipal ordinances must be adopted with a two-thirds majority of ‘all the actual membership of the Board’ to be valid on the first reading.” There are five commissioners and Commissioner Anne Reeve was absent because of illness Tuesday night. Under the statute, four votes were needed. The second vote will be taken when the board holds its Aug. 15 meeting and there is no two-thirds requirement for the second reading. Magic Pipers headline FNOW After Party

The Magic Pipers will headline the first FNOW After Party at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre on Friday, Sept. 8. Outdoor dance festival is first of its kind locally

The outdoor dance festival planned for Sept. 30, in Wake Forest is the first of its kind in the greater Triangle area. The Wake Forest Dance Festival will be a free, family-friendly, daylong event from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. featuring professional dancers at E. Carroll Joyner Park on 701 Harris Road. The inaugural event is presented by Wake Forest Arts in partnership with the Town of Wake Forest and will bring a day of dance to the Triangle in an outdoor setting. ‘Finding Dory’ is the free movie July 29

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department hosts a free outdoor movie every summer month, and the film that will be shown Saturday, July 29, is “Finding Dory.” The films begin at 8:30 p.m. in the amphitheater at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and/or chairs but are reminded that alcohol, smoking and unleashed pets are prohibited. Town installing sculptures, local art billboards

In advance of the formal opening, town employees are installing six sculptures and four enlarged works of art by local artists in downtown and nearby. The Wake Forest Public Art Commission will host a special reception to formally open its Wake Forest Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit and Spotlight on Wake Forest Artists Exhibit on Saturday, July 29. The event will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts Annex at 407 Brooks Street. Light refreshments will be provided. Burlington Mills to be closed for two months

The contractor developing the Preserve at Kitchin Farms subdivision will begin closing a single lane in a part of Burlington Mills Road east of One World Way in August, and then in mid- to late-August will close the road entirely for about two months. The closures will allow crews to widen the road. The official start and end dates will be announced soon, but the work is scheduled to be complete by late October. Gaines and Company is the contractor. Electronic message boards announcing the road closure will be in place in early August. Once the road is closed, a signed detour will be in place to direct traffic around the work area. Although this is not a public project, the Town of Wake Forest has received several inquiries from area residents with concerns about the project.
