Jones, Thompson filed Friday for mayor

Both Mayor Vivian Jones and Commissioner Jim Thompson filed Friday, declaring they are both seeking the office of Wake Forest mayor for the next four years. They each paid $50 to start their candidacy after noon Friday, the first day of the 21-day filing period. Two people filed Monday for the two open commissioner seats: Thad Juszczak and John Van Ness. The Gazette will have more information about them next week. Commissioner Margaret Stinnett said last week she will not seek a fourth term, and Thompson has chosen to vie for the mayor’s office rather than seek a second term. “I am excited about staying in my job as mayor as we work on some of the initiatives we have begun,” Jones said Tuesday in an e-mail. “The Smart City ideas I have discussed with UNC professors and their “living lab” approach which they want to use in Wake Forest

How can Durham Road be improved?

Town residents have told the Gazette about ways to improve Durham Road (also N.C. 98 Business) – some that could be printed – but now all the would-be traffic engineers and frequent drivers on that stretch from Retail Drive on the west to Tyler Run Drive on the east can find listeners for their complaints and suggestions. The Town of Wake Forest proposes improve traffic flow and safety by widening the road from two to three lanes and also installing curb and gutter, making it easier for pedestrians to cross streets and building a greenway trail across Richland Creek. The town also has a grant to fund the project. The meeting will take place Tuesday, July 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Wake Forest Town Hall ground floor meeting room most easily reached from the Taylor Street entrance. The July 18 meeting will have an informal, open house-style

Concrete issue delays sprayground opening

The town’s first sprayground, planned to open later this month in Taylor Street Park, will open later because of issues involving the subcontractor who was hired to pour the concrete, Work will continue on the sprayground, but there is no timetable for when it will open. The delay is not expected to affect the final cost of the project, which is $345,272. The Taylor Street Park Sprayground is a joint effort between the Town of Wake Forest and Wake County, which is responsible for administering the contracts and construction. When it is completed, Wake Forest’s first sprayground will be a dynamic, zero-depth aquatic play area that provides endless hours of fun for the entire family. The sprayground is designed to combine the sensations of different water movements – flowing, misting, and jetting – with dozens of diverse features for an unequaled aquatic play adventure. Pool construction set to begin in September

There have been slips in the construction schedule – adding a new pump house/filtration building caused one delay – but Wake Forest Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Director Ruben Wall said this week the bids to totally rebuild the Holding Park Pool are scheduled to be opened on Aug. 8 with construction to start in September. “The pump house did cause a minor delay but it will not impact the timeline to complete the project by next May,” Wall said. The new pump house was added to the project because the existing one is too small for the new equipment needed for all the features planned for the reconstructed pool. Also, the new pump house/filtration building will be in line with the lap pool while the existing one was offset from the swimming pool. The new pump house was added to the project in May after Wall made a presentation

Burlington Mill to be closed for two months

The contractor developing the Preserve at Kitchin Farms subdivision will begin closing a single lane in a part of Burlington Mills Road east of One World Way in August, and then in mid- to late-August will close the road entirely for about two months. The closures will allow crews to widen the road. The official start and end dates will be announced soon, but the work is scheduled to be complete by late October. Gaines and Company is the contractor. Electronic message boards announcing the road closure will be in place in early August. Once the road is closed, a signed detour will be in place to direct traffic around the work area. Although this is not a public project, the Town of Wake Forest has received several inquiries from area residents with concerns about the project. Officials are urging area drivers that travel through the area to plan ahead

Opinion: Cuts for needy, cash for greedy

(This is an editorial by Capital Broadcasting Company, WRAL-TV) How can a responsible senator vote for legislation knowing it will take health care from those who now have it, need it and wouldn’t have it otherwise? The answer seems obvious: Party-line politics. Like many in the nation’s capital, North Carolina’s two senators seem more concerned with what it will take to get 51 votes to pass a new health care plan than what it takes to make sure all Americans can afford health care. Sen. Richard Burr had hardly let the ink dry on the Senate’s tax-cut disguised as a health-care package before he announced support for it. North Carolina’s other Republican in the Senate, Thom Tillis, says he’ll back anything that will get 51 votes. Tillis led the N.C. House of Representatives when the legislature, in mean and blindly partisan anti-Obama stubbornness, refused to take billions in federal funds to expand Medicaid to half-a
