Filing for town board, mayor begins Friday

The filing period for nonpartisan municipal elections in Wake County begins at noon Friday, July 7, and runs through noon on Friday, July 21. Election Day is Nov. 7. We know there will be a contest for the mayor’s office because Mayor Vivian Jones has long said she will try for a fifth term and first-term Commissioner Jim Thompson announced in April he will challenge her and not seek a second term as commissioner. Three-term Commissioner Margaret Stinnett said this week she will not try for a fourth term, meaning no incumbents will be running, leaving the field clear for newcomers. Food Lion, Duke health care permitted in June

During June the Wake Forest Inspections Department issued permits for the new Food Lion in Crenshaw Corners and a new office building for Duke health care offices as well as 51 permits for single-family home and 21 townhouses. Wimco Corporation is building the grocery store in the commercial subdivision in the southeast corner where Durham Road (N.C. 98 business) and the N.C. 98 bypass meet. The fees were $65,423.39 and the 35,347 square-foot building will add $2.95 million to the tax base. Brasfield & Gorrie are constructing the two-story steel-frame Duke health care building at 3000 Rogers Road. The fees were $142,664.46 and the 59,340 square-foot building will add $3.7 million to the tax base. Pro b-b player to lead summer camps

Professional basketball player J.J. Miller, who plays in Europe, will lead this year’s basketball camps for boys and girls, and only a limited number of slots remain open. The camps are sponsored by the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department and led by Miller’s company, Hoopers Elite Basketball Service Company. A Chinquapin native, Miller (James Miller Jr.) has played professional basketball for 14 years. He is USA Basketball Youth Development Certified and is director/owner of Hoopers. J.J. People urged not to trespass on greenway

The Town of Wake Forest has received several reports of trespassing along the Smith and Sanford Creek Greenway. The greenway remains closed as the Smith and Sanford Creek Greenway Project continues. No trespassing signage is posted prominently throughout the work zone. Officials are once again strongly urging area residents to obey the posted signage and avoid these areas. Anyone observing trespassers or witnessing other suspicious activity is urged to contact the Wake Forest Police Department at 919-554-6150. Violators will be prosecuted. The Smith & Sanford Creek Greenway Project is a 2014 Wake Forest Bond Referendum initiative. Friday Night on White returns July 14

Friday Night on White, downtown Wake Forest’s popular outdoor music series, continues with Big Love on Friday, July 14. Presented by White Street Brewing Co., Friday Night on White takes place along South White Street in downtown Wake Forest from 6 to 9 p.m. on the second Friday night of each month April through September. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase at several downtown restaurants during every Friday Night on White. A variety of food and dessert trucks will also be on site in the parking lot behind Fidelity Bank, 231 South White Street, and along Owen Avenue. Job Corps offers opportunities

Each Monday at 10 a.m. at the Wake County North Regional Center, 350 East Holding Avenue, there is a presentation about the tuition-free opportunities for young adults ages 16 to 24, opportunities which can open horizons and doors leading to a satisfying career and life. The Job Corps, a residential training and education program, connects those young adults with the opportunity to learn skills through industry-recognized certifications and to further their education by obtaining a high school diploma or its equivalent or attending college in order to build real careers. New music series coming to downtown

The Listening Room, a series of monthly concerts featuring local artists, will kick off Saturday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Wake Forest Coffee Company on South White Street. The featured artists will be Cam Cokas and Elese Corson along with Chapel Hill musician and community organizer Matt Phillips of Matt Phillips and the Back Pocket. Reception July 29 to open two art exhibits

The Wake Forest Public Art Commission will host a special reception to formally open its Wake Forest Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit and Spotlight on Wake Forest Artists Exhibit on Saturday, July 29. The event will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts Annex at 407 Brooks Street. Light refreshments will be provided. The reception will have an informal, open house-style format, so area residents are invited to drop in any time between 2 and 4 p.m. Commission members and several of the featured artists will be on hand to answer questions and share information about the selected works of art. Volunteer caregivers orientation Aug. 10

There are many seniors, adults with disabilities and their family caregivers who are in need of assistance with simple, everyday tasks. The needs are all across Wake County but are more severe in Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Garner. The Center for Volunteer Caregiving is in hopes volunteers from these areas will step forward to help fill the need, and the center is sponsoring a volunteer orientation Thursday, Aug. 10, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Northern Wake Senior Center on East Holding Avenue. Flexible volunteer opportunities are available. The center gives priority to those seniors and disabled adults who have the greatest economic and social need or are at risk of institutional placement.
