Several Memorial Day ceremonies

The Wake Forest VFW Memorial Post 8466 invites area residents to one or all of its Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 29, and to help them place American flags on each veteran’s grave in area cemeteries on Saturday, May 27. There are over 1,500 veteran graves in the area in 15 cemeteries, and placing the flags takes a lot of man- and woman-power. Volunteers are asked to be at the American Legion Post on East Holding Avenue across from the U.S. Post Office between 8 and 9 a.m. to receive the flags and directions to the cemeteries and the veteran graves in each one. There will be refreshments. Also, on Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, VFW members will be at the Wal-Mart store on South Main Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. passing out the Buddy Poppy, a symbol of solidarity with disabled American veterans. WF celebrates Juneteenth on June 17

The Northeast Community Coalition will host a Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 17, beginning at 10 a.m. Juneteenth? It is the oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States. Although President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation took effect on Jan. 1, 1863, affecting all slaves in the Confederate States of America, it was not until June of 1865 that word reached Galveston Island, Texas, and U.S. General Gordon Granger read aloud General Order No. 3, announcing total emancipation of slaves, leading to a celebration. Today Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. Wake Forest’s celebration will begin at 10 a.m. in the Taylor Street Park with a meet-and-greet event followed by a Freedom Parade that will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Olive Branch Baptist Church and end at the Taylor Street Park. There will be events throughout the

Six Sundays features original bluegrass

Hank, Pattie & The Current are the headliners for the May 21 edition of Six Sundays in Spring in the amphitheater at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. You will enjoy two of North Carolina’s veteran bluegrass musicians join forces with some of the Triangle area’s most versatile musicians to create modern, American, acoustic music featuring the full range of their talents as composers and arrangers. The arrangements take on a new level of maturation that follows in the footsteps of Bela Fleck, Mark O’Connor, Chris Thile, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, and Tony Rice. Hank, Pattie & The Current want to pick up where seminal crossover groups like The Punch Brothers, Strength In Numbers and the ever changing Bluegrass Allstars call home.

Who would? . . . well, there are people

Who would someone steal something as distinctive and colorful as the Kona Ice trailer with its happy penguins and other cartoon animals? Why would anyone steal something that can be identified by almost every child and parent in northern Wake County and across part of the Triangle? Motive is missing, but someone stole the trailer the night of Friday, May 12, between 10 p.m. and 7:30 the next morning. It had been stored at the owner’s warehouse on Shearon Farms Avenue. One of the owners, Carina Veverka, said her husband planned to drive the already loaded trailer to a soccer tournament that Saturday. The couple has four other trucks but are sorely missing the trailer in May, which Veverka said is their second busiest month with May being the busiest. Although the Wake Forest Police Department is asking that anyone with information about the theft call the department, Veverka said
