Special needs movie night May 19

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre will host Special Needs Movie Night on Friday, May 19, at 6:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department, this free event will offer exceptional children and their families the opportunity to enjoy a film in a safe and accepting environment. To help ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone, the viewing area will include extra lighting, and the movie’s volume will be slightly lower. The event’s theme is “fun without repercussions,” so audience members will be invited to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing. There is no cost to participate, but a parent or caretaker must accompany each child. Concessions, including popcorn and soft drinks, will be available for purchase, but attendees are invited to bring their favorite snack. Alzeheimer’s events begin May 25

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will host a number of events over the next several months designed to raise awareness about Alzeheimer’s disease and related dementias. Each event in the Dementia Awareness Series will offer local residents the opportunity to learn about dozens of dementia-related programs, services, products and resources – all in one location. The Renaissance Centre is presenting the series in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern North Carolina and Wake Forest SING as part of an effort to establish Wake Forest as a dementia-friendly community. Suicide Blonde to play for CHERUBS

Suicide Blonde, an ‘80’s cover band, will play for a concert to benefit the nonprofit CHERUBS-CDH on Friday, June 9, from 9 p.m. to midnight at the Renaissance Centre for the Arts on Brooks Street Tickets are $10 before the event, available through EventBrite, and $15 at the door. CHERUBS-CDH is based in Wake Forest and was formed in 1995 by two parents to make the public aware of the prevalence of CDH, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, in babies – one in every 2,500 births – and support research in the treatment of the lung condition. There are 1,600 cases in the U.S. every year, and the cause is currently unknown. The diaphragm is formed in the first trimester of pregnancy and controls the lungs’ ability to inhale and exhale. Senior center this week

May 31 is National Senior Health & Fitness Day, and the Northern Wake Senior Center has an open invitation to the Wake Forest Community to visit that day and see the various fitness classes offered at the center. On Friday, May 19, from noon to 4 p.m. AARP will sponsor a Safe Driving Class. The cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for nonmembers. Please sign up at the front desk. Evelyn Imelda Ryan Wake Forest Evelyn Imelda Ryan, 83, departed this world on the evening of May 8, 2017 at Duke Raleigh Hospital. Evelyn was the youngest of the magnificent seven, the children of John J. and Julie (Barrett) Ryan. She was born on May 13, 1933 in Hasbrouck Heights New Jersey. Evelyn was raised in North Bergen, New Jersey where she graduated from S. Brigid’s School, and Saint Michael’s High School in Union City, New Jersey. Ms. Ryan furthered her education by earning a bachelor of arts degree from Caldwell College for Women in 1963. She enhanced her edification by attending The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and completed her education by earning a master of arts in teaching from Saint Michael’s College in Winoonski Park, Vermont in 1974. Evelyn started her professional career as an operator for New Jersey Bell telephone before embarking on her vocation
