Water, water . . . a pool update

The Taylor Street Sprayground is not a pool – it is a watery playground for tots to teens with adults encouraged to join the fun too. It is under construction now so all you sidewalk supervisors should take a folding chair to watch the watery magic emerge. It is expected to be complete in mid-July. Ruben Wall, director of the town’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, said this week that the project is a joint venture with the town and Wake County, which provided 80 percent of the funds for the sprayground with the town paying 20 percent. The total cost is $345,272. “The County is responsible for administering the contracts and construction,” Wall said in an email. “Hollins Construction, located on Rogers Road in Wake Forest, is responsible for all concrete and utility work, and they have partnered with Vortex, the supplier and manufacturer of the sprayground equipment

Board gives Padgett a raise

After a short business meeting Tuesday night the Wake Forest commissioners and mayor went into a closed session to evaluate Town Manager Kip Padgett and town attorney Eric Vernon, and went back in open session to approve a 5 percent raise for Padgett’s excellent evaluation, making his salary $162,225. There was no report about Vernon’s evaluation, but the board will make comments about Padgett’s at their next meeting. During the business meeting, the board heard Planning Director Chip Russell give an update on the Wake County Transit Plan – he heads the transit authority board – and found himself defending the plan’s rollout, which begins with enhanced bus service in all areas, rural and towns and cities. “We don’t have good bus service in Wake County,” he said. The plan is to add buses with more frequent and reliable routes around the county, in towns and between towns and cities.

Learn about a forgotten cemetery Sunday

It lies in a stand of trees at the edge of a former pasture that will soon sprout homes, apartments, businesses and stores. Many of the remaining markers are toppled or broken because of vandals and neglect through the years. Members of Friendship Chapel Missionary Baptist Church knew of the cemetery and several members worked to clear out brush and restored monuments in recent years. The church still owns the land for the forgotten cemetery where older generations of the church are buried. But now, thanks to the efforts of the church, the Wake Forest Historical Association members and a grant from the Jandy Foundation, Jan and Andy Ammons and their daughter, a lot of the past is being uncovered. The grant paid for a ground-penetrating radar search of the cemetery in February, a search which revealed 400 marked and unmarked graves, 277 possible graves and one possible unmarked grave

Rescheduled cemetery tour is Saturday

Bad weather forced the cancellation of the annual walking tour of the historic Wake Forest Cemetery from last Saturday to this, May 20. But no worry; no one there is going anywhere. (I know, it’s a bad joke.) This Saturday, with fine weather, the cemetery on North White Street will look its best as visitors explore it from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The tour is free, and parents are encouraged to bring their children for a first-hand experience in town history. This year there will be a special children’s hand-out highlighting interesting artifacts on the grounds. Designed for interaction between a child and their parents or accompanying adult, the photos and sites will help educate them about the historical significance of the cemetery as they locate significant places during the self-guided tour. The special feature of the tour are the docents – family members and volunteers – who are stationed

Want a fun Fourth? Help the committee

The Fourth of July is a little less than two months away, and the all-volunteer committee needs a little help from their friends. They are always happy to have more hands and bodies help out with all the activities that make Wake Forest’s celebration special, but they need monetary help as well. As Chairman Rob Mitchell said in a letter this week, “With the costs of putting on such a high quality event continuously rising, we need your support now, more than ever! Please consider being a part of this special celebration by helping to sponsor our 2017 Celebration with a donation.  Your contribution will help put smiles on the faces of thousands of children and adults alike.” Mitchell noted: “When the Town of Wake Forest asked residents to define what gives our community its small town character, they identified our Fourth of July Celebration as one of the things that make Wake Forest the charming small town that it is. The Wake Forest Fourth of July celebration continues to be one of the best fireworks displays in
