EG Peters Band plays at Six Sundays

The EG Peters Band describes itself as the most versatile in the Triangle area, and their playlist lives up to it – jazz, dance, party tunes, rock, Motown, beach, novelty, R&B, country and the hits from every decade beginning with the fabulous ‘50s. You can appreciate their wide range Sunday when they are the headline group for Six Sundays in Spring in the amphitheater at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. Bring a picnic, lawn chairs and a blanket to spread under the trees. There will also be a variety of food and dessert trucks. Remember alcoholic beverages and gas and charcoal grills are not allowed, but there are two large charcoal grills at the park. Unleashed pets are also banned. Learn about the cemetery Saturday

Lace up your walking shoes because the annual walking tour of the historic Wake Forest Cemetery is planned for Saturday, May 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is free, and parents are encouraged to bring their children for a first-hand experience in town history. The special feature of the tour are the docents – family members and volunteers – who are stationed at several gravesites where they talk about the people buried there and their importance in the town when they lived. Also Frank Powell and other members of the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will be there in uniform and talking about the men and boys who went into battle during the Civil War. And sometimes they bring authentic guns, even a small cannon, but that is not a promise. There will also be women in 1860-era dresses and hats, and Scottish bagpipe players

Old cemetery rediscovered

It lies in a stand of trees at the edge of a former pasture that will soon sprout homes, apartments, businesses and stores. Many of the remaining markers are toppled or broken because of vandals and neglect through the years. Members of Friendship Chapel Missionary Baptist Church knew of the cemetery and several cleared out brush and restored monuments in recent years. The church still owns the land for the forgotten cemetery where older generations of the church are buried. But now, thanks to the efforts of the church, the Wake Forest Historical Association members and a grant from the Jandy Foundation, Jan and Andy Ammons and their daughter, a lot of the past is being uncovered. The grant paid for a ground-penetrating radar search of the cemetery in February, a search which revealed 400 marked and unmarked graves, 277 possible graves and one possible unmarked grave where it is
