File for town board seats in July

Wake Forest voters will elect a mayor and two commissioners in November, but the action really starts this spring because the two-week filing period for candidates runs from noon on July 7 to noon on July 21. Candidates for both seats must be a resident of the town and a registered voter. Currently town elections are nonpartisan although there is a bill in the General Assembly to require party affiliation on the ballot. Two months away from the filing period there are three announced candidates. Mayor Vivian Jones has said she will seek a fifth four-year term, and one-term Commissioner Jim Thompson has announced he will challenge her, leaving his seat open. Commissioner Margaret Stinnett has not said whether she will seek a third term. Planning Board member Thad Juszczak announced a month ago he will campaign for a commissioner seat. Because there are no districts in Wake Forest, the

Want a fun Fourth? Help the committee

The Fourth of July is a little less than two months away, and the all-volunteer committee needs a little help from their friends. They are always happy to have more hands and bodies help out with all the activities that make Wake Forest’s celebration special, but they need monetary help as well. As Chairman Rob Mitchell said in a letter this week, “With the costs of putting on such a high quality event continuously rising, we need your support now, more than ever! Please consider being a part of this special celebration by helping to sponsor our 2017 Celebration with a donation.  Your contribution will help put smiles on the faces of thousands of children and adults alike.” Mitchell noted: “When the Town of Wake Forest asked residents to define what gives our community its small town character, they identified our Fourth of July Celebration as one of the things that make Wake Forest the charming small town that it is. The Wake Forest Fourth of July celebration continues to be one of the best fireworks displays in

Opinion: Why put sidewalk in the street?

There was nothing resolved about the North Avenue changes during the Wake Forest Town Board’s work session last week except Town Manager Kip Padgett did say nothing would be done about the retaining wall and changes on the north side of the street until the Stadium Drive part of the construction was complete. Therefore, the major change that has led Marty and Debbie Ludas to protest the current plan will be done before the Ludas property and the retaining wall are addressed. (Please see the April 19, 2017 Gazette for the article about the plan.) The major change is that the new sidewalk on the south side of North Avenue (north side of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) will not be on the seminary property as the existing sidewalk is. Instead it will be moved off the sidewalk and onto the current eastbound travel lane of North Avenue. That shift
