Brief Bits

The agenda for the May 2 Wake Forest Planning Board meeting was not available until too late afternoon Wednesday, but we know there will be one item on it, the request to approve a site plan for a 8,000-square-foot building at 1704 South Main Street. The existing two-story house will be razed. This request was on the April 4 planning board agenda and postponed to May because there was no one to speak in favor although there were immediate neighbors who asked questions and voiced concerns about a possible restaurant with noise, lights and odors. Larry Ray owns the property that has been in his family for over 40 years, but it is under contract to purchase by Forestville Development LLC. That corporation was established in January and shares an address, 333 South White Street in Wake Forest, with the surveying company Cawthorne, Moss & Panciera. Ray had the property

Storm drops 7+ inches of rain

The unnamed storm over the weekend and Monday dropped something over 7 inches of rain on Wake Forest though some rain gauges may have recorded even more. The Town of Wake Forest issued bulletins throughout the weekend, listing roads and streets where flooding could be expected and closing all the town’s greenways and trails because of significant flooding. The flooding affected bridges and boardwalks as well as the trails. All the greenways were reopened Tuesday except the Smith Creek Greenway at Burlington Mills Road. Another danger – a possibly failing dam in the Fairlake subdivision on Purnell Road – was also averted Tuesday after the earlier swift water subsided. Called Lewis Dam, it holds back about 10 acres of water from an unnamed stream, a tributary of Horse Creek, though it might be Mud Branch. On Tuesday morning dam safety inspectors from the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality, along with

Stein, Marshall headline Senior Scam Jam

If you are older – 60, 70, 80 – you are increasingly a target of online, telephone and door-to-door tricksters who use lies, fraud and scams to steal your money. They will steal from younger folks, but many target only the elderly. On Thursday, May 18, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein and Secretary of State Elaine Marshall will be in Wake Forest along with several other prominent experts for a free public workshop, Seniors at Risk: 21st Century Scam Threats, Preventions and Solutions, where people can learn how to protect themselves, their clients and their loved ones from financial, technological and other types of fraud. The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Renaissance Centre on Brooks Street. Senior Scam Jam is free, but pre-registration is required at www.tfsnc.org/events no later than Friday, May 12. Other featured speakers will include Stephanie Bias from the N.C.

Sign up Friday for archeology seminar

There is still time to sign up for the Archeology Workshop on Saturday, April 29, sponsored by the Wake Forest Historic Preservation Commission that will be held at both the Alston-Massenburg Center and the Ailey Young House on North White Street. The house, a one-and-one-half-story saddlebag house (that description will be explained during the workshop) is a rare example of Reconstruction-era rental housing that was the childhood home of Allen Young, an important educator in the history of Wake Forest and the state. It is named for his mother, who bought the house after renting it, and one of his daughters, who was the first black and second woman commissioner in the town. The April 29 workshop is open to everyone, but may be of particular interest to those with an interest in history, historic preservation and archaeology. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required at www.wakeforestnc.gov/archaeology-workshop.aspx.
