Ludas says North Ave. plan ‘bait and switch’

Marty Ludas, who with his wife, Debbie, own two historic buildings on North Avenue, told the Wake Forest Town Board Tuesday night that the plan the town presented to the Historic Preservation Commission for a certificate of approval (COA) earlier this year is a case of “bait and switch” that will irreparably damage their property. The commission dropped the plan in March but it still remains in limbo as part of the larger Stadium Drive Complete Street Plan. North Avenue was added to the plan to repave the very bumpy street. Also, and very recently, someone spray painted the sidewalk next to his commercial building, commonly called The Corner, to apparently indicate the sidewalk is to be replaced. The current plan for North Avenue is to: *Move the centerline of the street 6 feet to the north to accommodate a 6-foot sidewalk that will be built on the current eastbound

The skaters are in town again

About 400 adult skaters with their coaches and families are in Wake Forest this week, participating in the 2017 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships at the Polar Ice House in The Factory on South Main Street. The event, hosted by the Triangle Figure Skating Club, began Tuesday and lasts through Saturday so there is still time to see some wonderful skating in person. Tickets begin at $20 per day and are available at the Polar Ice House box office. According to U.S. Figure skating, the national governing body for the sport, competitors at the U.S. Adult Championships are divided into five age groups (21-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, 66+) and two tracks (masters and adults). Events are held in singles, pairs and ice dance, and in dramatic and light entertainment. Athletes qualify for championship events by placing in the top four at one of three sectional championships held earlier this year.

Brief Bits

The Wake Forest Town Board had a short agenda aside from four proclamations on Tuesday night. The commissioners unanimously approved the consent agenda and then turned to the only other item before them, consideration of a special use permit for the planned small retail development named Wake Union Place on the site of the former Parker-Hannifin (Schrader-Bellows) site on Wake Union Church Road at its intersection with Capital Boulevard. Commissioner Brian Pate tried to persuade the other four commissioners to make the street extension to the St. Ives subdivision where it ties into Lola Lane a one-way street, saying the residents there have asked for it because they fear additional cut-through traffic to Kearney Road. The subdivision streets have grassy verges and swales, part of the plan because it is in the Falls Lake watershed. No one agreed, though Commissioner Margaret Stinnett said her concern was the lack of improvements
