Planners OK Crenshaw Corners, three other requests

Tuesday night the Wake Forest Planning Board unanimously approved Crenshaw Corners, a commercial subdivision protested by its Crenshaw Manor neighbors, along with a 100-unit townhouse addition to Traditions, a waiver of the height restriction for a hotel on Stadium Drive, and a zoning change from neighborhood business to general residential. They accomplished all that, with four public hearings, the election of Ed Gary as chairman and Thad Juszczak as vice-chair and welcoming three new members, in under two hours. About 40 people concerned about Crenshaw Corners were in the audience but only two men spoke, mostly about the uncertain future development of five 1- to 2-acre lots aside from the “upscale” grocery store planned for the largest lot, 6.3 acres, in the southeast corner of the property. The existing stub to the property from the N.C. 98 Bypass (Dr. Calvin Jones Highway) will become a right-in, right-out entrance/exit. The existing

2017 ballot: mayor and two commissioners

Yes, it is January, and yes, the nonpartisan town election is not until Nov. 7. But the filing period is in July, a short two weeks, and it takes a lot of time for possible candidates to decide to run and then create a committee, appoint a treasurer and complete all the other required details. This is the early warning signal for the election where we will elect a mayor and two commissioners, currently Mayor Vivian Jones and Commissioners Margaret Stinnett and Jim Thompson. The Gazette sent emails to those three asking about their plans. Jones responded Tuesday afternoon. “I do plan to run for re-election this year. I still have ideas about ways the Town of Wake Forest can go forward and I have been encouraged to continue by a number of citizens. I love Wake Forest and I believe our best days are still ahead. It is my

Some hopeful post office news

The best news in a long time about the operation of the Wake Forest U.S. Post Office came from Rolesville Mayor Frank Eagles, who has been very actively complaining about the service for his community and has received encouraging words from the USPS Greensboro office and a senator’s office. He asked Rolesville residents to send him their complaints about postal service and received 83 answers about problems in 24 hours. “They are still coming in but a few at a time,” he said Tuesday at the same time he was dealing with calls from national news agencies and reporters about the incident at Rolesville High School that has been seen nationwide because of a student video. He said their complaints were being compiled into a spreadsheet and forwarded to U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis’ office. “The senator’s office has been in constant contact regarding this complaint,” Eagles said in an email

WF Power changing all electric meters

Wake Forest Power is in the second year of a three-year project aimed at upgrading the electric meters for all its residential and commercial customers. The project, which began in late 2015 and will continue into 2018, entails Wake Forest Power technicians replacing nearly 7,000 Power Line Carrier meters with new Radio Frequency (RF) meters. In contrast to the current Power Line Carrier meters, which rely on electric distribution lines to transmit information between the meter and the electric substation, the new RF meters will utilize a network of routers. Positioned throughout the Wake Forest Power service territory, the routers will transmit information significantly faster and allow for updates in real-time. The RF meters will also provide more detailed meter information, such as the current voltage at a particular residence, as well as voltages along the electric distribution system. Wake Forest Power scheduled the meter rollout to occur in phases
