USPS statement

This week the USPS Greensboro office, at the request of the Gazette editor, issued the following statement: “The former Postmaster retired nearly a year ago and presently, Wake Forest has an acting Postmaster, who is committed to providing quality retail services and mail delivery on its 42 routes. The Postal Service continually maintains its facilities to ensure they are safe, convenient and welcoming to customers. Wake Forest customers who have questions about retail services or mail delivery can call the Wake Forest Consumer Affairs Hotline at 336-668-1375.” The Gazette editor called that number early Wednesday afternoon and a patient man listened to the list of complaints and promised to pass them on to the person in charge of operations. Last week the editor had asked a media specialist in the Greensboro office for the name of the retired/resigned former postmaster and when he left; the name of the interim postmaster

27587 sprawls over three counties

The 27587 ZIP Code is a monster, sprawling over 104.8 square miles of land and 5.3 of water in four counties and three cities. It had 53,860 residents in 2013 and 20,117 housing units. It goes up to Grissom in Granville County and up almost to Youngsville in Franklin as well as down into Raleigh. Mail carriers have to go to the other side of Falls Lake on their routes and well past Rolesville on the east, delivering in the town and all the new subdivisions it has added. If you Google 27587 you can find a map. In the last three years, most town and area residents are aware of the tremendous growth in residential housing inside and outside of Wake Forest – apartments, duplexes, townhouses and single-family houses. Every one of the people living in those new homes expects to get their mail – and so do all

PO truck catches fire

A United States Postal Service truck caught on fire early Tuesday, sending the driver scrambling to exit the vehicle and save what she could of the onboard packages. At approximately 7:04 a.m. the Wake Forest Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire near the intersection of Heritage Lake Road and Heritage Heights Lane. By 7:10 a.m. firefighters had extinguished the blaze, but the truck was destroyed. Officials say the fire started in the engine compartment then spread to the rest of the vehicle. The carrier and a passerby managed to rescue most, but not all, of the onboard packages. The carrier was not injured and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Affected customers with questions about missing or recently mailed packages are urged to call 336-668-1307. Postal Service officials say in the event an item was damaged, it will be returned to the

Bobby Perry Day celebrated

Wednesday customers, friends and South White Street business owners helped long-time barber Bobby Perry celebrate 51 years of cutting hair in Wake Forest as he prepares to sell his shop and retire at the end of this month. Not that he wants to, but as he said, “My legs are giving out.” His faithful customers are feeling left adrift, not sure where they can go now. Certainly no one else these days can offer the same careful cuts tailored to each one with the careful gossip bits thrown in. One longtime customer said Perry never repeated a rumor until he had confirmed it with three independent reports. And he knew more about the Harrison, Ray and other local families than many family members. “I didn’t make much money, but I made a lot of friends,” he said this week, still cutting a customer’s hair. A pretty good way to end

Wine lounge, yoga studio planned

Wake Forest residents Amy and Brian Burkhardt plan to begin making major changes in January to the building at 153 South White Street, now Bobby Perry’s barber shop “Our plan is for a wine lounge carrying unique wines and craft beer for on site consumption and retail sale. We will also offer a variety of yoga classes for all levels with some heated classes. We will be exploring other fitness classes and personal training in the studio space.  Tastings, food & wine pairings and other special events will be planned as well as private rental opportunities,” the Burkhardts explained in an email this week. “And yes, our plans do include the rooftop! There will be exterior stairs at the rear of the building providing access to Unwined Upstairs. Yoga classes will be held on the roof, weather permitting, along with an additional wine lounge seating area.” They said they hope to open in April.

Editorial: GOP plans to gut Social Security

By Alan Pyke, Think Progress By the time Donald Trump is sworn in as president, tens of thousands of Americans will already have stopped paying into Social Security for the entire year. Those lucky few earn at least $2.1 million a year — a level roughly 100,000 tax filers reached in 2014, according to the IRS. They owe their yearlong retirement tax holiday to a rule capping the amount of annual income that is subject to payroll taxes. With wealth inequality’s explosion over the last four decades, a huge portion of the money generated by workers’ sweat is now escaping the retirement system. A higher cap — or eliminating the cap entirely — would make Social Security fiscally secure until nearly the end of this century and ensure that the system can provide the same modest, vital support to retirees’ dignity that it does today. Republicans would rather destroy the program entirely. A new GOP plan would throw

Editorial: Tell officials your views

The Republican majorities in Congress and President-elect Donald Trump are planning a number of changes to programs that directly affect Wake Forest residents. You may want the Affordable Care Act to be repealed, or to get a voucher rather than payments for Medicare or to have your Social Security reduced. If not, you need to make your voice heard to try to head off enactment of these and other changes to essential programs. Suspects sought in egging attacks

The Wake Forest Police Department is asking for the public’s help locating the person or persons responsible for the recent rash of car and house eggings in our community. Over the past several days the police department has received reports of cars and homes being egged along Cornwell Drive, Kaplan Woods Way, Creek Moss Avenue, Gross Avenue, White Carriage Drive, Marshal Farm Street, and Burge Court. Police warn residents that egging is a childish crime with adult consequences. Although it may seem like a harmless prank, egging could constitute a violation of state law, depending on the circumstances, which could result in the arrest of the offender. The Wake Forest Police Department relies on the town’s citizens to be the eyes and ears of the department. Anyone witnessing or experiencing suspicious activity is urged to call the police department at 919-554-6150. You may remain anonymous.

Students combat mental illness stigma

Wake Forest High School’s DECA chapter is proud to announce that it has initiated a grassroots campaign, “Stand Against the Stigma” (SAS). The goal of the campaign is to generate a more supportive and understanding community by redefining mental illness, educating the population of the school and surrounding area, and dispelling negative and false beliefs about mental illness and its treatment.   To accomplish this goal, founders, Caroline Roach and Jake Petrillo, have hosted a variety of events to engage the school and community in their cause. Events include performances by guest speakers, information booths at football games, and an Anti-Stigma week. Furthermore, the campaign has created a SAS club to make a lasting impression now and for years to come.   Guest speakers from Music Over Mind, an organization dedicated to healing mental illness through the power of music, came to Wake Forest High School on Thursday, Dec 8th
