Board application deadline extended

The Town of Wake Forest has extended the deadline for anyone wishing to apply to serve on the Cemetery Advisory Board, Greenways Advisory Board and Urban Forestry Board. Town residents and residents of the town’s extraterritorial jurisdiction now have until 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, to submit a completed application. The town extended the application deadline for these advisory boards after failing to receive a sufficient number of applications for their upcoming vacancies. Applications are available on the town’s website at www.wakeforestnc.gov/advisory-boards.aspx and in the town clerk’s office at town hall. Applications may be completed and submitted online. Completed applications may also be mailed or delivered to the Wake Forest Town Hall, Attention: Town Clerk, 301 Brooks Street, Wake Forest, NC 27587, or faxed to 919-435-9419. B-Ball clinics for special needs people

The Town of Wake Forest is partnering with the City of Raleigh and Special Olympics of Wake County to host a series of basketball clinics for children and adults with special needs on Sundays from Nov. 20, 2016, through Feb. 26, 2017. The clinics will be offered from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Flaherty Park Community Center, 1226 N. White St. The deadline to register is Thursday, Nov. 3. (Rise, Inspire, Succeed and Empower) Women’s Empowerment Workshop on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alston-Massenburg Center at 416 North Taylor Street. Classic Movie Weekend Nov. 4-5

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will offer up two days’ worth of time-honored film favorites during the Big Screen Classics Movie Marathon Weekend Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5. Tickets on sale for Christmas Dinner

The 69th annual Wake Forest Community Christmas Dinner will be held on Monday, Dec. 5, at The Forks Cafeteria on Brooks Street. The $15 tickets are now available at The Forks, the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce, the Wake Forest Historical Museum, and the offices of The Wake Weekly. Additional tickets are being sold through local organizations such as the Wake Forest Rotary, the Wake Forest Purple Heart Foundation, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Wake Forest Woman’s Club. The Christmas Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and ushers in the holiday season with a Southern menu of fried chicken, roast beef, bread, sides, and dessert. PD’s Turkey Drive needs your help

There may be few families enjoying a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day unless donations pick up for the Wake Forest Police Department’s annual Turkey Drive. “It’s pretty slow so far. We have $575 donated to date,” Detective Michael W. Sattler said this week. “Any help would be great.” The department accepts cash and checks through Saturday, Nov. 19, that they use to purchase turkeys. Checks should be written to the Wake Forest Police Department. On that same day, Saturday, Nov. 19, officers will be on hand to accept frozen turkeys taken to the Wake Forest Police Department at 225 South Taylor Street from 9 a.m. to noon. They will distribute the turkeys on Monday, Nov. 21, from 2 to 11 a.m. at the Wake Forest Community House on West Owen Avenue. There are still tickets available for the third anniversary celebration of the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, the 2016 Broadway Ball for the Arts from 6 to 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16. Themed “To Broadway and Back,” this year’s Broadway Ball will feature a show-stopping performance by JTL (Just a Touch of Love) performing a variety of dance favorites.
