Board opts for new, expanded pools

Tuesday night the Wake Forest Town Board agreed to build a new Holding Park Pool with several features including a lap pool, a slide plunge/lesson pool with open and enclosed sides, a children’s multi-use pool with play features and a shaded pavilion, all on the same site as the existing abandoned pool. The bad news? It will not open until the spring of 2018. Ruben Wall, the director of the town’s parks, recreation and cultural resources department, laid out three possible plans, all over $2 million. In the first plan, the contractor would build all the features listed above but do it in two phases with the 25-yard lap pool available for use in the spring of 2017. But the contractor would have deconstruct some of the first year’s work to build the complete pool area by the spring of 2018. The cost, with the deconstruction added, was estimated at

Good Rogers Road news

There are two bits of good news about Rogers Road that should encourage all the school, business and shopping traffic that has been severely inconvenienced by the bridge reconstruction and the Hurricane Matthew washout at a different location. Transportation Planning Manager Candace Davis said Monday that the state Department of Transportation has provided an update. “The bridge is expected to be open no later than Nov. 8. If that changes, they will provide an update.” We will also know when it opens because DOT will remove the detour signs. Remember the Town of Wake Forest, the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce and many of the merchants on either side of the bridge affected by the closure will hold a free community celebration Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – the Bridge Bash – in the parking lot at Heritage Pointe Shoppes at 3309 Rogers Road. Expand shopfront area, commissioners say

Town board members rarely do anything except ask a few questions about details during their joint public hearings with the Wake Forest Planning Board, but Tuesday night Commissioners Jim Thompson and Margaret Stinnett along with Mayor Vivian Jones challenged the shape and size of the overlay shopfront zoning district recommended by Planning Director Chip Russell, saying it should be extended on both sides of Brooks Street from Elm Avenue to Wait Avenue. The current shopfront overlay district runs along both sides of South White Street from Roosevelt Avenue to Elm. The extension requested by the planning department would run along more of South White, Elm and Brooks, stretching to include the Renaissance Plaza. The Renaissance Plan update has identified the traditional downtown on South White and Renaissance Plaza as the major energy centers in the larger downtown Renaissance Area and recommends connecting them by making the area between more walkable.

Brief Bits

Although there is work in progress at the future Lidl grocery store site in the southwestern corner where the N.C. 98 Bypass crosses South Main Street, Assistant Planning Director Charlie Yokley said the company does not have a building permit yet. It has been held up because the design has not been approved by the town’s Technical Design Advisory Board. “The work taking place is site work based on approved construction plans.” * * * * Also, although Wegmans’ developer, Columbia Development, has a contract with Southeastern Baptist Seminary to purchase an 18.75-acre site, Yokley said in an email Monday, “We have not received an application for Wegmans to date.” Wegmans has announced plans to build in Cary and Chapel Hill and last week said it would open a 120,000-square-foot store on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh. A company spokesman did not return a request for information. * * *
