Rogers Road repair date indefinite

Though there is a pretty definite date for the opening of the Rogers Road bridge over Smith Creek, there remains an obstacle for traffic on the major road between Wake Forest and Rolesville – the washout of the pavement between Hobblebush Way and Jeffreys Lane. On Oct. 7 and 8, during the local onslaught of Hurricane Matthew rain and wind, the waters of Sanford Creek could not be contained in the two 60-inch pipes under the road and crumbled the pavement. Since then, because sightseers had been walking on the damaged road section and taking pictures and selfies, Wake Forest police officers put up caution tape and patrol the area regularly. There is no definite date for the repair, Wake Forest Town Manager Kip Padgett told the town board last week and repeated the same news this week. One problem is that the solution is a nonstandard pipe. “NCDOT is

Enjoy the Expo and bring food

Bigger, better, more of everything. That is what people are saying when they see the lineup for the 2016 Business Expo planned for tomorrow – that is Thursday, Oct. 27 – from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Richland Creek Community Church on Burlington Mills Road. And you can do good at the same time by taking nonperishable food to the free event to help restock the shelves at Tri-Area Ministry Food Bank. It needs lots of everything: cereal, oatmeal, tuna, pasta, canned vegetables, canned fruit, soup, diapers and baby wipes, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti sauce, canned meats, grits, rice, macaroni and cheese, dried beans, crackers, flour and sugar. Bring what you can but no glass jars, please. At the Expo sponsored by CenturyLink and presented by the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rolesville Chamber of Commerce, the door prizes are pretty nifty: Traeger Elite 22 wood

Planners to consider shopfront zoning

There is only one item on the Wake Forest Planning Board’s agenda for Tuesday, Nov. 1, and that is to expand the Required Shopfront Overlay District. It now covers South White Street and some of Brooks Street and Elm Avenue. The change would include more area on South White, Brooks and Elm and stretch to Renaissance Plaza which holds the Renaissance Centre. The intent is to require new buildings in the overlay area to be built with no setback from the sidewalk and provide either a shop front with an awning, a gallery or an arcade. “This extension will provide assurances that new building development will result in spaces for active uses (retail, restaurants) along the route between the two major centers of energy in downtown,” Planning Director Chip Russell wrote in his recommendation that the planning board agree with the request. This is one of the major changes in

County offering flu vaccine

This fall Wake County will make flu vaccinations available to residents this fall . The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone 6 month old and older be vaccinated against the flu each year. Although there are flu clinics in Raleigh (listed below), the nearest location available to people who live in or near Wake Forest is the Northern Regional Center at 350 East Holding Avenue in Wake Forest, and there are no clinics, only appointments. You are urged to call the center at 919-562-6300 to set up an appointment for yourself and your family members. After the Gazette editor questioned why there were no clinics planned for the regional centers, Wake County Human Services spokesman Elizabeth Brandt said in an email, “Wake County used data and lessons learned from previous clinics to make decisions about when and where to hold walk-in flu vaccination clinics in 2016. “Participant data
