Dementia awareness series concludes Sept. 20

“Understanding & Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors” will round out the series of three workshops about dementia on Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Renaissance Centre on Brooks Street. Behavior is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present challenges for caregivers to manage. Area residents are invited to attend this session and learn how to decode behaviors, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. The moderator for the sessions is Peggy Best, Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern North Carolina Chapter Associate Director for Programs and Advocacy. A day of service for greenways

The Wake Forest Greenways Advisory Board is celebrating National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. by hosting a Day of Service at two town facilities: Smith Creek Soccer Center information distribution booth – volunteers are needed to encourage enrollment in town’s Adopt-a-Trail program; answer questions about current and future greenway development; distribute Bike.Walk.Run maps and bicycle safety information Richland Creek Greenway at Olde Mill Stream – volunteers are needed to assist with trail cleanup and tree planting The board is inviting volunteers of all ages to sign up for one of these service opportunities at www.wakeforestnc.gov/national-public-lands-day.aspx. Fight hunger at the CROP Walk

The Wake Forest CROP Hunger Walk 2016 is set for Sunday, September 25, beginning and ending at the Wake Forest Historical Museum, 414 North Main Street, with sign-in at 2 p.m. and step-off at 2:30 p.m. The route is approximately 1.5 miles on flat sidewalks in beautiful historic Wake Forest. Volunteers will provide water for participants. Town permits 38 homes in August

The only commercial building permitted by the Wake Forest Inspections Department in August was for Panera Bread at 11665 Northpark Drive that will be built by the Sela Building Corporation, no address given. The fees for the 4,568-square-foot building were $36,808.63. The department also inspected fit-ups for four new businesses; Nazir Ahmad Dental at 3150 Rogers Road, a meeting hall or banquet facility at 102 West North Avenue, Heritage Salon at 3117 Rogers Road, and retail space at 1000 Forestville Road. Also the department inspected for pre-occupancy for Consulting Service at 1784 Heritage Center Drive, Serenity & Grace Therapeutic Services at 1788 Heritage Center Drive, and Personal Storage Space at 5101 Unicon Drive. Scammers continue to target grandparents

As we celebrate National Grandparents Day on September 11, Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina  wants to warn consumers of all ages on how grandparents are the specific target of a common scam commonly known as the “grandparent” or “emergency” scam. Here’s How the Scam Works: You receive a call from someone claiming to be your grandchild. The caller often claims to have gotten into a predicament in a different state or country, and asks you to wire money to him or her to post bail or pay for damages. The money ultimately goes to a scam artist and you are out possibly thousands of dollars. Senior Center this week

September is National Senior Center Month and on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon there will be a volunteer and participant appreciation day with the first Ann Johnson Senior Center of the year award and celebration.
