Vacant seats on four boards

You can make a difference in our community by applying to fill one of the vacancies on the Cemetery Advisory Board (CAB), Senior Center Advisory Board, Technology Advisory Board (TAB) and Urban Forestry Board (UFB). These boards were established to give citizens input into what happens in the community and to advise the Board of Commissioners on matters that affect citizens and their town government. All residents of Wake Forest and its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) are eligible to apply for these openings. Music at Midday resumes in September

Area residents are invited to enjoy great music, dine outside, and experience the fall season at the Town of Wake Forest’s Music at Midday weekly concert series. Sponsored by the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department and Wake Forest ARTS, the free music series begins Thursday, Sept. 1, and continues on consecutive Thursdays through Sept. 29. Scheduled from noon to 1 p.m., the concerts will feature a variety of local performers and take place in Centennial Plaza, the gateway to the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Dementia awareness series continues tomorrow

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will host the second session in the Wake Forest Dementia Awareness Education Series on Thursday, Aug. 18. The meeting will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Renaissance Centre at 405 Brooks Street. Entitled “Dementia Conversations,” the Aug. 18 workshop will offer tips on how to have honest and caring conversations with family members about deciding when to stop driving, going to the doctor and making legal and financial decisions. “Understanding & Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors” will round out the series on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Behavior is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. Have coffee with some cops

The Wake Forest Police Department will host Coffee with a Cop at the Wake Forest Coffee Company, 156 South White Street, on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 8 to 10 a.m. Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for police officers and community members to come together in an informal, neutral setting to discuss community issues and build relationships – one cup of coffee at a time. The majority of contact law enforcement officers have with the public tends to occur during emergencies or emotional situations, which are often not the best times to build relationships. “Coffee with a Cop” aims to breaks down barriers and allow for relaxed, one-on-one interaction. 37th annual CROP Walk set for Sept. 25

The Wake Forest CROP Hunger Walk 2016 is set for Sunday, September 25, beginning and ending at the Wake Forest Historical Museum, 414 North Main Street, with sign-in at 2 p.m. and step-off at 2:30 p.m. The route is approximately 1.5 miles on flat sidewalks in beautiful historic Wake Forest. Volunteers will provide water for participants. Challenge: Raise $5,000 in 30 days

The Wake Forest Chamber Foundation for Common Progress has issued a challenge to chamber members and area residents to raise $5,000 in 30 days to support the Youth Leadership Wake Forest program and its adult counterpart, Leadership Wake Forest. Your donation will go towards educational programming for 30 high school students participating in Youth Leadership, as well as support the philanthropic class project that the adult Leadership Wake Forest class undertakes. Market returns to Renaissance Plaza

After last week’s move across the street to the town hall parking lot, the Wake Forest Farmers Market will return to its usual home in the parking lot at Renaissance Plaza in front of the Town of Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts. It will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. Vendors will be offering all of summer’s bounty — cantaloupes, watermelons, peaches and peach ice cream, blueberries, tomatoes, sweet corn – along with the many varieties and cuts of meats – beef, chicken, pork, goat, lamb, turkey and rabbit – eggs, seafood, breads and baked goods, fair trade coffee, chocolate and local honey. Senior Center this week

The heat can be dangerous for older people even if they stay inside with air conditioning. Make sure you and your family and friends drink clear liquids to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor exercise and get plenty of rest. Also, check on friends and family members to see how they are faring. Do you know someone who is without air conditioning and does not have a fan? Check at the front desk where they can put you in touch with Wake County’s program to provide fans for seniors. Next week on Tuesday, Aug. 23, Evolution Hearing will present a program about how to talk to someone with hearing loss at 10 a.m. followed by free hearing screenings from 11 a.m. to noon.
