Veterans invited to Purple Heart Dinner

Purple Heart Medal recipients and military veterans are invited to the eighth annual Wake Forest Purple Heart Dinner on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 5:30 p.m., at Richland Creek Community Church at 3229 Burlington Mills Road. Hosted by the Wake Forest Purple Heart Foundation, the dinner is an opportunity for the public to help honor those wounded in battle. In addition to Purple Heart Medal recipients and their families, the dinner is open to all veterans, military families and the public. This year’s keynote speaker is retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Timothy Payne of Raleigh. An 11-year veteran, he was deployed three times with the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg. Payne was on foot patrol in Afghanistan on July 3, 2011, when a 30-pound improvised explosive device detonated under him. Home/Garden show here Aug. 13-14

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts, 405 S. Brooks St., will host the inaugural Wake Forest Home & Garden Show on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13-14. The show is scheduled on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1-6 p.m. Sponsored by Mitchell Heating & Cooling and B93.9 New Country, the event will showcase the latest in home improvement products, services, and features. Popularity = more volunteers needed

As the popularity of Friday Night on White continues to grow, so too does the need for volunteers. Due to the incredible success of the first four Friday Night on White concerts, the Town of Wake Forest is seeking additional volunteers for the remaining performances. Presented by White Street Brewing Co., the Friday Night on White outdoor music series takes place along South White Street in downtown Wake Forest from 6 to 9 p.m. on the second Friday night of each month from April through September. Attendance at the concerts has steadily increased each month. Well over 4,000 area residents turned out to see the Magic Pipers Band on April 8, followed by an estimated 9,000 on May 13 for Brickhouse, and over 10,000 on June 10 for The Will McBride Group. Flag-raising to honor Rosato

Area residents are invited to attend the 14th Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony on Monday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. The program will take place in Centennial Plaza, in front of the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 Brooks Street. The Aug. 1 service will honor Neil Rosato who served his nation in the U.S. Navy. Members of Rosato’s family have been invited to participate in the ceremony which will include patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying, and the ceremonial flag-raising. Following the raising of the American flag, the U.S. Navy service flag will be raised in recognition of the military branch in which Rosato served. Both flags will fly in Centennial Plaza throughout August. Photographs and other remembrances of Rosato will also be displayed in Centennial Plaza during the ceremony, then in the town hall lobby through the end of August. WF Storyfest here Aug. 6

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will host the 2016 Forest of Wake Storyfest on Saturday, Aug. 6. Featuring three professional storytellers, along with entertaining workshops and concerts for children and adults, the festival will bring the art of storytelling to the Wake Forest community and celebrate one of humanity’s oldest art forms. Audiences of ages 6 and older are sure to relate to the colorful, humorous, and inspirational stories shared by the lineup of storytellers, including Wake Forest’s Daniel Blaisdell, Durham’s Donna Washington, and Charlotte’s Lona Bartlett. Blaisdell is a North Carolina solo guitarist and singer who can provide appropriate music to make any event a memorable occasion. Enjoy a concert in the park Aug. 7

Spend an evening in Wake Forest with family and friends and enjoy some foot-tapping, finger-snapping good times during two upcoming concerts at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Senior Center this week

The next big event at Northern Wake Senior Center is the annual yard sale on Aug. 12 and 13. You can start donating Aug. 9, but be reminded clothing and shoes cannot be accepted. Volunteers are needed all week to help receive the donations Aug. 9 through 11 and then to staff the sale on Aug. 12 and 13. Sign up at the front desk. All the proceeds benefit the center. Remember the caregiver and grief support group meets the second Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The free health screenings and blood pressure checks are provided at 9:30 each Monday by a variety of local businesses, which are the Franklin Manor, Stay at Home Senior Care and Dr. Casey Baldwin, a pharmacist. Dr. Albert Lunney Meiburg Raleigh Dr. Albert Lunney Meiburg of Raleigh, formerly of Wake Forest, died on Saturday, July 23, 2016, in the Health Center of Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh after a short illness. He was born on September 3, 1925, in Seneca, South Carolina, oldest son of Albert and Gladys Burley Meiburg. His family he moved to Clemson when he was a young child and it was there he attended elementary and high school, graduating from Calhoun-Clemson School in 1941. He enrolled in Clemson College (now University), but volunteered during World War II and served in the United States Navy in the Pacific. After the war he completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Clemson and then earned the bachelor of divinity and doctor of theology degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he studied under Dr. Wayne Oates.
