Pate tops in votes Tuesday

Realtor Brian Pate easily won election to a seat on the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners Tuesday, rolling up 873 votes in the unofficial vote count. He was followed by incumbent Commissioner Anne Reeve, who had 836 votes, and by incumbent Commissioner Greg Harrington with 724 votes. The two newcomers to the town’s political scene, Chad Casale and Brian Clemson, trailed with 415 and 449 votes, respectively. Tuesday’s turnout was very low, with 12.42 percent of eligible voters casting ballots countywide. From the Wake Forest figures it appears fewer than 1,000 people out of 22,644 registered voters bothered to vote, about 4 percent. The percentage of votes cast in the 14 precincts for the candidates were 26.18 percent for Pate, 25.07 for Reeve, 21.72 for Harrington, 13.47 for Clemson and 12.45 for Casale. It is impossible to calculate the number of voters from those percentages or the vote total because

Meetings changed to Nov. 5

Because of the town election on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the usual day for the town board’s work session and the planning board’s regular meeting, both have been delayed to tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 5, with the usual times, 5:30 p.m. for the town board and 7:30 p.m. for the planning board. The town board’s agenda is short, although items can be added that night. Senior Planner Candace Davis, who handles all transportation planning from greenways and trails to new roads, will give the board an update on the town’s transportation plan. The other items are a discussion of the quarterly financial report with Finance Director Aileen Staples and a review of the draft agenda for the Nov. 20 business meeting. The planners will consider the requests for two subdivisions. One is a repeat of the Tryon subdivision on Copper Beech Lane case which was approved in the summer of 2014 but

The Wake Forest Police Department’s annual Turkey Drive got underway in late September, but donations are way down compared to previous years. “So far donations have been sparse,” said turkey drive organizer Officer M.W. Sattler. “Now that we’re in November, we’re hoping they will begin to pick up.” The police department is accepting monetary donations through Saturday, Nov. 21. Cash and checks are accepted and will be used to purchase additional turkeys. Checks should be written to the Wake Forest Police Department. Donations of frozen turkeys may be dropped off at the Wake Forest Police Department, 225 S. Taylor St., on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. until noon. Bazaar will help Tri-Area

The activities committee in the St. Ives subdivision off Kearney Road is once again hosting a Holiday Bazaar featuring local vendors and artisans. It will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the subdivision’s clubhouse at 505 Capellan Street. This year the committee is foregoing the usual space rental and instead asking the vendors and artisans to donate the $10 usual fee to Tri-Area Ministry Food Pantry. On the day, shoppers will be asked to donate nonperishable food items. Tri-Area Ministry operates with an all-volunteer staff from a building it owns at 149 East Holding Avenue – actually built to house the all-volunteer Wake Forest Rescue Squad – and is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays to provide food to families and individuals in the area in need. You can mail checks to Tri-Area Ministry, P.O. Box 1394, Wake Forest, NC 27588,

Leave leaves behind the curb

Wake Forest’s annual loose leaf collection program began in October and continues through mid-March. When preparing leaves for collection, residents are urged to rake leaves into piles behind the curb – not into the street or gutter – so they do not interfere with traffic or drainage. In recent days Wake Forest officials have noted dozens of incidents in which residents raked or blew leaves out of their yards and into the street and gutter. Raking leaves into the streets can lead to clogged storm drains which can cause flooded streets and yards. The practice of raking leaves into the gutter is also harmful to the environment. Rain runoff carries leaves and other yard waste in streets, ditches and storm drains through the stormwater drainage system into streams and lakes. Yard waste contains nutrients that feed unwanted algae and harm aquatic life. Leaf collection in Wake Forest is performed weekly according

Park fountains turned off

Just as it does every year at the conclusion of Daylight Saving Time, the Facilities Management Department has shut off the water fountains at all town parks. Town crews disable the water fountains during the winter months to avoid water freezing in pipes and for general maintenance. The restrooms at all Wake Forest parks will remain open. In 2015 the town installed heating units and insulation and made other modifications to the park restrooms essential to ensuring they remain accessible year-round. For more information, contact Facilities Manager Mickey Rochelle at 919-435-9455 or mrochelle@wakeforestnc.gov or Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Director Ruben Wall at 919-435-9561 or rwall@wakeforestnc.gov.
