Ammons sells The Factory

Twelve years after he took to heart the message “Be Creative” on the billboard announcing the former Athey plant on South Main Street was for sale, Jeff Ammons has sold his creation inside the old plant, The Factory, for $17, 850,000. The new owner is The Macsyddey Company, a New York investment group. Ammons said he sold The Factory because he had been approached by an investment group that owns “lots of large real estate. I just decided it is a good time. I love the developing part, the creative part, but now that is over 10 years old it is a good time to sell, a very good time so I can go back to doing what I enjoy.” What he enjoys is running a company called Live Green which shows builders of new homes and owners of old homes how to seal and handle air to keep out

Crenshaw Hall will be funeral home

Crenshaw Hall on Durham Road, the historic house where the Crenshaw-Williams-Jones family lived for 100-plus years and most recently an event venue operated by a family member, has been sold to Clancy & Wheeler Properties and will be the home of the Clancy-Wheeler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, probably opening the first of next year. The new owners are Thomas J. Clancy, Jerry Strickland, and Andy Wheeler. Clancy and Strickland own Strickland Funeral Home in Louisburg, and Wheeler was formerly with Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest. Clancy said this week that their plans to open are a bit delayed because the state Department of Transportation is making them move and widen the driveway, but he said they hope to be open for business by Jan. 1, 2016. “It’s a beautiful place,” Clancy said. The family lost the property in March of this year through bankruptcy and became the property

Planners wrangle but approve projects

Members of the Wake Forest Planning Board and residents who live near two projects on Tuesday night’s meeting had more questions and concerns about traffic, traffic signals, buffers and runoff than the proposed uses. The meeting ended with members voting down at least five motions until finally five members agreed to approve the South Main business plan. The request by Lat Purser and Associates to rezone 2.95 acres on the southeast side of South Main to conditional use highway business was the most contentious. The land runs from South Main to Mangum Drive, which has been entirely residential. Planning board members were concerned that drivers coming from the east on Ligon Mill Road would use Mangum and turn onto Carter Street as the best way to reach the Wendy’s which will be built there. Member Colleen Sharpe, who lives nearby, said. “They’re already using Carter and Mangum as a cut-through.”

South Main crash meeting

If you were asked where you are most likely to be involved in a vehicle crash, would you name South Main Street away from the Capital Boulevard intersection? Probably not. But the part of South Main from Wake Drive to Star Road is where there were 131 vehicle crashes in the five years between July 2010 and June 2015 as drivers were turning into businesses and attractions such as Golden Corral, Merchants Tire & Auto Center, Exxon and Quality Food Mart, Taco Bell, North Wake Animal Hospital, The Town of Wake Forest with the North Carolina Department of Transportation want to make that road safer for all drivers. DOT has a number of road improvements it is proposing, and on Thursday, Sept. 10, local residents are asked to attend an open house at the Wake Forest Town Hall to see the improvements, ask questions and make comments. The meeting will
