WF Power upgrading meters

Wake Forest Power has begun a three-year project to upgrade the electric meters for all its residential and commercial customers. From now through 2018, Wake Forest Power technicians will replace nearly 7,000 Power Line Carrier meters with new Radio Frequency (RF) meters. In contrast to the current Power Line Carrier meters, which rely on electric distribution lines to transmit information between the meter and the electric substation, the new RF meters will use a network of routers. Positioned throughout the Wake Forest Power service territory, the routers will transmit information significantly faster and allow for updates in real time. The RF meters will also provide more detailed meter information, such as the current voltage at a particular residence, as well as voltages along the electric distribution system. The meter rollout will happen in phases beginning with the northeastern and eastern portion of the service territory, followed by the northwestern and

Mallpass Brothers perform June 27

The Malpass Brothers will take to the stage at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts on Saturday, June 27, at 7 p.m. Steeped in traditional country music, the Malpass Brothers feature a smooth vocal blend and skillful musicianship while performing in the styles of Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins and Hank Williams, Sr. As young boys, Christopher and Taylor Malpass embraced the music of their granddad’s phonograph records. Christopher earned his first talent show trophy at age 7, and Taylor was playing mandolin by the time he was 10. Today, the duo promote the work and music of classic country artists they treasure while creating new music and making their own mark in the lineage of a rich American cultural heritage. Car show will aid nonprofits

The car show that will draw hundreds of people to downtown Wake Forest Saturday, June 20, is not really about the muscle cars, sports cars, classic and antique autos and trucks. It is just the candy to lure sweet-toothed people to ooh and aah over the cars while the organizers raise money from the entries to funnel funds to several nonprofits such as the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club, the Purple Heart Foundation of North Carolina and the Miracle League of the Triangle. Candy has never been better for you. Its not that the entry fee is expensive. It is just $20 per vehicle, but so many people want to show off their cars and trucks that the organizing group, Wake Forest Downtown, does make quite a bit of money. The show will go on from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. along South White Street, the grand sponsor is

Some peeks at the past

June 11, 2003: Second bypass contract to be let this fall The state Department of Transportation plans to let the construction contract for the second section of the N.C. 98 bypass in Wake Forest on Oct. 21 of this year. If that date holds firm, Jonathan Nance, the chief engineer for District Five of DOT, said construction of the bypass from South Main Street (U.S. 1-A) to Capital Boulevard would begin in 2004. Construction of the final section of the bypass and the most costly, that from Capital back to N.C. 98 at the Thompson Mill Road intersection, has been moved up. DOT plans to begin buying land for the right-of-way in 2005 and begin construction in 2007. Barnhill Contracting Co. was the low bidder for the first section at $9.8 million. Nance estimated the cost of the second section – which includes an elevated interchange at Capital and a

BBB helps seniors avoid scams

Over the past four years, more than 5,500 senior citizens in eastern North Carolina have benefited from Better Business Bureau’s Senior Series program. BBB launched the program in April 2011 in an effort to educate seniors about ways to recognize and steer clear of common scams. Nationwide, criminals steal billions of dollars each year from senior citizens. Seniors are often targets of scam artists because they generally are more trusting of others and perceived to be easier to persuade. They also typically have more free time and tend to make decisions by themselves. BBB advises consumers to beware of the following scams that often target senior citizens: Lottery Scam You receive a check and letter announcing you have won a large sum of money. The letter tells you to deposit the check and wire funds to cover fees, insurance and taxes. Ultimately, the check is counterfeit and the money you
