Publix will come to town

It really is official. Columbia Properties Inc. will build The Shoppes at Heritage Village which will include a Publix. Wouldn’t you want to place a well-loved, highly rated grocery store in a town growing every day, now 37,000-plus and estimated to hit 48,000 in ten years? Wouldn’t you want to build a Publix in an upscale planned subdivision with 19,607 people (6,975 homes) within a two-mile radius and 1,680 homes planned in three subdivisions in that two miles. Then there is what Columbia Properties’ marketing brochure calls “the going home” corner, the corner where Rogers Road intersects with Forestvillle Road to the east and Heritage Lake Road to the west, one of the busiest in town aside from the Capital Boulevard intersections. As the brochure said, now that Heritage Wake Forest is nearly built out, “national builders are racing to acquire the last couple of surrounding parcels. All that and

Town Hall leaks again

There are leaks at Wake Forest Town Hall again, and once again it is water, not information. Thankfully, there are only two leaks compared to the several immediately after the building was completed and occupied in 2010. “One is a repeat offender,” Deputy Town Manager Roe O’Donnell said, “and it looks like a warrantee issue.” That leak is in the ceiling of the staircase that curls around the building from the ground floor on South Taylor Street to the main lobby on Brooks Street. O’Donnell said the town would call Exterior Diagnostic Services of Apex back to examine and repair the leak. “It was definitely an area that was worked on” when EDS undertook the major repairs in 2013 and 2014, replacing every window and repairing damage to brickwork and interior walls. The second leak has only occurred once because, O’Donnell said, it needs “a particular kind of rain.” Somehow,

Commissioners hear from Moss Creek

The residents in Moss Creek subdivision on Burlington Mills Road met with town officials Monday night at Richland Community Church and about 30 of them were at the Wake Forest Town Board’s meeting Tuesday night to again express their opposition to building a parking lot adjacent to the subdivision. The parking lot would also be near Raleigh’s Smith Creek wastewater treatment plant and would have access from the driveway to the plant. The gates would be closed from sunset to surnrise. Tim Evans spoke on behalf of the community, saying they have a number of concerns about safety, security, loss of three acres of woods and wise use of town assets. He said the parking lot would cost $500,000. There was no resolution because the board does not act on requests the same night. Town Manager Mark Williams said the board will take the comments under advisement for future consideration.

Brief Bits

Work is proceeding apace at Wake Forest Crossing shopping center on Capital Boulevard, but it is frustrating to see the concrete and the workers but not be able to tell which and what will occupy the spaces. Brian Mountcastle with Weingarten Realty was able to give us a clue this week. The stores will be East Coast Wings & Grill, Envy Nail Salon, Kirklands, Petco, TJ Maxx, Michael’s, Ross, Massage Envy and Mattress Firm. “We are also working to finalize our last few leases, which will give us 100 percent occupancy. East Coast Wings & Grill does indeed specialize in wings of all varieties and has restaurants along the North Carolina coast and in the mountains, but nothing really close to Wake Forest. Kirklands is a home décor store and there are others nearby in Cary, Knightdale and Raleigh. All the other future tenants are well known locally. * *

Use 919-556-9111 – it’s faster

That’s why the Wake Forest Police Department is urging residents to save 919-556-9111 in their telephone contacts and use the 10-digit number to report police-related emergencies in Wake Forest. Although 911 is recognized as the official number for reporting emergencies, Wake Forest is not a part of the Raleigh-Wake 911 network. As a result, any time a Wake Forest resident dials 9-1-1, the call is answered by a Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center telecommunicator who must spend precious time determining where the call originated then transferring the caller to Wake Forest Police. By dialing 919-556-9111 directly, the caller is automatically connected to a Wake Forest Police Department telecommunicator who can immediately send police assistance. The Wake Forest Police Department established the alternate number several years ago. Wake Forest residents are encouraged to save the 10-digit number in their telephone contacts for easy access during police-related emergencies only. Urgent situations requiring fire

DWI checkpoint somewhere

The Wake Forest Police Department is coordinating a DWI checking station (checkpoint) this weekend. Other Wake County law enforcement agencies are expected to participate in the operation, along with additional state and local resources, as part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program Multi-Agency task force. The task force is aimed at reducing impaired driving through enforcement efforts and public awareness. The checking station will be operational from 11 p.m. Friday, April 24, until 2 a.m. Saturday, April 25. The Wake Forest Police Department has no reservations concerning the release of information about the fact that a checking station will be operating within the town this weekend. Please feel free to report that the checkpoint will be taking place as such information may serve the public interest by convincing some to not drive if they have been drinking. In addition to the DWI enforcement work performed at the checking station, Wake

Find town history at the cemetery

The college professors and presidents, the storekeepers and housewives, the soldiers and their survivors may not be able to speak from the graves in the Wake Forest Cemetery, but their descendents and friends will speak Saturday, May 9, during the annual self-guided walking tour at the cemetery on North White Street. The tour will last from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the Wake Forest Cemetery Advisory Board.
