Fire station tops CIP list

The Wake Forest Fire Department’s Station #4 on Jenkins Road, where ground preparation is already underway, tops the list of Capital Improvement Projects in the 2015-2020 update released last week. Its cost is listed at $1.83 million for the construction, which should be complete this year. Fire Chief Ron Early lists $465,000 as the cost for the fire truck and other necessary equipment The department has already hired the new staff, which is currently in training. The town will pay for the station with the proceeds from the fire impact fee charged to all new construction in town. That fund currently stands at $1,910,358, and Finance Director Aileen Staples reported this week the town has already transferred $241,603 to the fire department for the station and will transfer another $93,459 for its design early this year for a total of $335,062. Celebrate Mardi Gras Saturday

Dig out the masks, the cheap beads, put on your fine feathers and head to downtown Wake Forest Saturday, Feb. 14, for the Mardi Gras Street Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is all free and all fun for children and adults alike with face painters, an inflatable playground, special contests and more. One highlight is the Mardi Gras Walking Parade. The lineup begins about 12:45 p.m. in Centennial Plaza in front of Wake Forest Town Hall on Brooks Street, and the march will start at 1 p.m., winding up East Owen Avenue and north along South White Street, ending in the Depot Parking Lot. No registration is required, but all children must be accompanied by an adult. Youngsters are invited to ride bicycles, be pulled in a wagon, roller skate or walk. Bikers must wear their helmets. Join the Cougar March

If you are already downtown for the Mardi Gras Festival or if you are a Cougar Booster, you will want to be at the Depot Parking Lot on South White Street at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, to join the Cougar March and Community Celebration to honor the 2014 Wake Forest High School football team. Last fall the team advanced to the 4AA state championship in Winston-Salem, where it lost to Charlotte’s Mallard Creek for the second year in a row. The team has also been in the eastern regionals for three of the past five seasons. Youth charged for Heritage HS threat

The 14-year-old Florida juvenile who posted a Twitter message saying “I’m shooting up Heritage (expletive)” was arrested last week in Pinellas County, Florida. He may have been a Heritage student last year. He is charged with written threats to kill or do bodily injury, electronic communication. He posted the threat on the Wake http://www.lbwr.org/ambien/ County Public School System’s Twitter feed at 10:44 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, and Heritage administrators notified the Wake Forest Police Department at 8:24 a.m. Wednesday. All three Heritage schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution, but the emergency codes were lifted by noon.

Men in gray van still sought

There have been no more sightings of two men in a gray van or SUV who were suspected of trying to lure children into the vehicle – or at least none reported to police. There had been at least three such incidents that the Wake Forest Police Department was investigating when the Gazette reported on a press conference and plea for cooperation in the Jan. 28 issue, but no children were harmed and ran to tell their parents about the encounters. Help all youth play ball

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department is seeking sponsors for its 2015 Youth Baseball and Softball season. Over 80 teams are expected to hit the diamond this spring providing nearly 1,200 area boys and girls the opportunity to compete in a safe and fun environment. Sponsorship support is needed to help offset the total operating cost of the program and keep fees affordable for all participants. Team sponsorship levels range from $100 to $1,600 and include an array of benefits. Contributions are tax-deductible and sponsors will be promoted throughout the spring season on players’ uniforms, program publications, and through signage and website postings on the Parks and Recreation website. Renewal sponsorships are available for returning sponsors. Scoreboard sponsorships are also available for $2,000 and $2,500, along with several signage options ranging from $100 to $300. Tickets on sale for Comedy Night

If you are in need of a good laugh or two – or a whole evening that tickles your funny bone – then hurry up to get your tickets for the annual Comedy Night hosted by the Wake Forest Rotary Club and the Wake Forest High School Band Boosters. This year’s event will be held at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre from 6:30 t0 10 p.m. The $30 tickets give each person entry to an evening of laughter, music and food. See, taste downtown during AAH

Friday night Wake Forest’s historic downtown South White Street will be alive with shops and studios open late and visitors, newcomers and old hands, seeing what they have to offer. There will be free horse and carriage rides, weather permitting, and receptions for featured artists in most of the studios. Maureen Seltzer reported, saying Lauri Arntsen has responded to requests from her fans and will be the featured artist at The Artists Loft, upstairs from the Wake Forest Coffee Company during Art After Hours Friday, February 13th. The venue will come alive with expressive paintings that will coincide perfectly with this month’s Mardi Gras festivities. Arntsen will host encaustic painting demos on Friday night and the next day’s Mardi Gras events. She will also be teaching two workshops at The Artist Loft. Town will begin issuing bonds

Next Tuesday the Wake Forest commissioners are expected to approve issuing $4.33 million in general obligation public improvement bonds to finance the first of the street, park and greenway improvements town voters approved last fall. The Gazette will furnish a list of those projects next week. The full meeting packet with the information was not complete by press time this week. The long-needed Franklin Street/N.C. 98 bypass traffic signal will be one step closer Tuesday as the commissioners are expected to approve a funding agreement with the state Department of Transportation for that signal. At the start of the meeting the commissioners and audience will hear a presentation about choices which must be made as Wake County frames another transportation plan, and Mayor Vivian Jones indicated last week she would be asking the commissioners to tell her what their choices would be. The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department will host two sessions of a “Valentine’s Princess Boutique & Ball” on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Wake Forest Community House, 133 W. Owen Ave. The programs are scheduled from 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. All Wake Forest-area princesses ages 3-7 are invited to celebrate Valentine’s Day with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty and come dressed in their favorite princess ball gown. Upon arrival, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty will treat the girls to a mini boutique, including hair, nails and make-up, in preparation for the ball. Parents are invited and encouraged to join their princess during the final 30 minutes of the event as she walks down the red carpet to reveal her princess makeover and enjoy dancing at the ball with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.
