Opinion: Who is protecting us?

I follow the news and am more than concerned about the U.S. Senate Republican’s apparent plan to destroy the country’s healthcare system and a large part of its economy – taking away healthcare from millions in order to give an enormous tax brake to the most wealthy.

I wonder if President Trump will fire or attempt to fire Robert Mueller III, the special counsel for the Russia investigation, and worry that there will be no one and no investigation to really determine if Trump and his various buddies did connive with the Russians.

But these concerns and worries pale before my growing fear that no one is undertaking the task of making sure our election system is strong enough, safe-guarded enough, to fend off current and future attacks. If Russian operatives or their allies were able to get into the databases and voter rolls for 39 states over the last couple years, what will they do in next year in the 2018 elections?

Who is in charge of building fire walls to keep intruders – Russian, Chinese, Chechen – out of the databases? Who is allocating the money to undertake this very large task? Who is hiring all the programmers and staffers it will take to safeguard all the information in the state and local election offices?

These efforts will not come from the very top, because Trump and congressional Republicans are still trying to deny the Russian intelligence offensive. And I see nothing in the North Carolina General Assembly that even suggests legislators want to invest in safeguards against outside attacks to our election system.

And then there is the other very real threat, that in the near future Russian operatives can create widespread failures in our electric grids as they have proved recently in at least two eastern European countries.

Who is protecting us?

  1. Where is there ANY evidence that the Russians interfered with our election or that Donald Trump was in ANY way involved in this alleged interference? According to Mr. Comey, after over 7+ months of investigating, NO evidence of Russian tampering was found, let alone any evidence that Trump was involved. Yet the investigation pushes on, determined to keep this country in a continued state of unrest and distrust. And by the way, being a close friend of James Comey, Robert Mueller is by law not allowed to lead an investigation that includes James Comey Mueller needs to be summarily dismissed. He’s wasting time and our money on this witch hunt.

  2. Bravo. You are not alone. I am worried that my husband’s plan, purchased in the marketplace and quite affordable at $230/month, will disappear. We are around 30 and want to start a family soon, but as teachers, a rise in costs will make it nearly impossible. Many in our government are more concerned about leakers than the information that is being leaked, revealing a dangerous attempt to undermine our democracy. Instead of embracing jobs producing clean energy and leading the world as we used to, we tout coal and oil to please the corporate puppeteers. But stay optimistic- people are becoming more involved than I have ever seen. Most of all, we need to love and respect one another.

  3. I worked in healthcare for over 20 years. The drug and insurance companies get richer and richer. There is no one answer. Both parties are for themselves and not the people who voted for them Why would they be? The insurance they receive is perfect.

  4. Funny how no one complained when Obama was wrecking the healthcare system and violating the Constitution on a daily basis.

  5. If you are going to question the direction/differences at the federal level, that’s a good thing. The democratic process is working. However, you have failed one main point in you Opinion: your name. If it’s required to make a comment, it should be required of the writer of this Opinion.

    1. As the owner/editor/publisher of The Wake Forest Gazette I assumed everyone knew that any opinions expressed in it were mine unless otherwise expressly noted. In future, I will sign my opinions.

  6. There are more channels on your tv than CNN, MSNBC & NBC. You might want to watch a few others from time to time to get a better picture of what’s going on in the real world. I’m currently paying $1,801/mo that’s $21,612 per year for health insurance for a family of two thanks to ObumaCare. Big changes need to be made in the current system so that millions of Americans don’t face that in their near future.

  7. Well it is quite obvious that the Trump administration will have to fix the mess left behind by the previous administration that did absolutely nothing for the past 8 years to safe guard the integrity of our election system and the rest of the systems that have been “hacked” over the last 8 years.
