Shirley Mavis Johnson
Shirley Mavis Johnson of Wake Forest passed away on March 7, 2016, at the age of 86. Shirley was born in Cleveland and lived in Northfield, Ohio, for almost 30 years after marrying her high school sweetheart, James C Johnson Jr. in 1954. They moved to Raleigh in 1984.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa O’Ryan and her husband, Jack, Jacquelyn Fairchild and her husband, Mark, and Susan Pitcher, all of Wake Forest; and her son, Jim Johnson and his wife, Robyn, of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and her brother, Russ Mavis and his wife, Jeanne, of Wilmington. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim; her daughter, Heidi; her sister, Dorothy Bischoff; and her beloved dog, Kirby.
Shirley’s greatest joys were her family, snow skiing, selling real estate and her dog, Kirby. She also enjoyed sailing, tennis, running and golf in her prime and was always an avid bridge player. For many years at Northfield Baptist Church in Ohio she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She began her real estate career at age 62 and worked for Fonville Morisey until her health forced her to retire at age 77. She loved working for FM, helping people with their real estate needs and all the friends she made throughout her late-in-life career. A charter member of Richland Creek Baptist Church in Wake Forest, she served there for many years on Sundays during the hospitality hour and on Wednesday nights during the Family Dinners.
Tenderhearted and gentle in spirit, Shirley always showed compassion, mercy and grace to others. Her cheerful disposition, wonderful sense of humor and loving spirit will be deeply missed by all that knew her. Exemplifying her love of God and her faith, she served others in church, helped neighbors and friends, and always took time to lift up and encourage those in need.
A graveside funeral service will be held to celebrate her life at 11 o’clock Friday morning, March 18, 2016, at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest where she will be laid to rest.
